Matchup & timing

In the current roster, use the Counter Dragoons to intercept cavalry threatening the Culverins, and keep the guns behind a screen so they can answer enemy artillery. Begin the order well before the intended fight: the 60-second delivery and 30-population commitment make this a planned army addition, not a quick defensive call. Choose another Consulate force if the opposing composition does not make both components useful.

Why the roster history matters

The name stayed the same while its units and population changed. The Asian Dynasties version fielded seven Kalmucks and three Culverins for 26 population. Definitive Edition initially raised the mounted count to nine Kalmucks and the total to 30 population; a later update replaced those Kalmucks with nine Counter Dragoons. The present Counter Dragoon description therefore should not be used as a description of every older build.

Keep the artillery alive

Three Culverins give the army a way to pressure opposing artillery, but they need time and space to fire. The nine Counter Dragoons can respond to cavalry closing on the guns; avoid sending them so far away that the artillery is left exposed. The force works best as a coordinated group with any remaining Chinese infantry or cavalry covering targets outside its specialist roles.

Current formation and changes

The Industrial Age company costs 1,600 Export, takes 60 seconds and occupies 30 population. It delivers nine Counter Dragoons and three Consulate Culverins in the current Definitive Edition. The earlier game used seven Kalmucks; an intermediate Definitive Edition roster increased the count to nine before update 14.43676 changed them to Counter Dragoons.

Mobile anti-cavalry with artillery

Counter Dragoons can screen the three Culverins from enemy cavalry, while the guns can answer hostile artillery and attack fixed targets. Keep the mounted screen near the guns instead of chasing too far from the formation. Its large population and Export cost make it a late-game plan that should be started while the army can still protect the route to its target.
