Effect & research conditions
Research takes 40 seconds and costs 250 Wood, 250 Coin and 500 Influence for African civilizations. The bonus applies to the hand resistance of Cavalry and Shock troops, improving their ability to withstand melee attacks. It does not increase hit points or protect against ranged damage, so it does not replace unit counters or positioning.
Research condition
Exploration Age; Trading Post or Tambo on a Sudanese kingdom, or an Ethiopian Mountain Monastery with the Sudanese Alliance. Cost: 250 Wood, 250 Coin and 500 Influence where applicable; 40 seconds.
When to research
Research it when the army relies on Cavalry or Shock troops and the opponent is likely to fight them in hand combat. It is less useful against an army dealing most damage at range. Include the Influence and research time in the timing plan, and compare the protection with an immediate unit reinforcement.
Resistance is specific to melee damage
The technology targets hand resistance for two unit classes; it does not broadly increase every defensive stat. Its value depends on the enemy’s attack mode and on having eligible Cavalry or Shock troops in the field. Use it as a supporting upgrade before a melee-heavy engagement, while preserving ranged screens and counters for threats it does not address.
