Tag
Unit tags are the shared classes that Age of Empires III uses to connect units to damage bonuses, penalties, and technology effects. A unit can have several tags at once, and some tags are visible in its information panel while others are hidden.

Classification rules
A unit’s tags determine which attack multipliers apply and which group-based improvements affect it. Definitive Edition has made more tags visible over time, and updates can add, remove, or rename classifications. Read the unit’s current information panel together with its own page rather than inferring its class from its appearance or name.
Reading unit information
Check tags when choosing counters or researching an upgrade that affects a class. This is especially useful for unusual units whose battlefield role differs from the tag they use for damage bonuses.
Use classifications to understand upgrades and counters
A unit can carry several tags, and those tags determine which attack multipliers, technology bonuses, and shipment effects apply. Tags may be visible or hidden and have changed across Definitive Edition updates. Check the current unit panel and related technology rather than assuming a classification from appearance. This is especially important when a unit transformation changes its role or tags.
Track classifications through a unit conversion
Some Home City Cards and technologies convert units, while others change their tags without changing their name. That distinction can alter counter multipliers and future upgrade eligibility. When planning a conversion, compare the before-and-after tags and verify which bonus applies to the resulting unit in the selected version. A familiar unit name is not enough to infer the full interaction.
How unit tags drive combat effects
Tags are shared classifications assigned to units and buildings in Age of Empires III. They let the game apply one rule to many eligible entities, such as an attack bonus against Cavalry or a technology that improves Infantry. Several tags can apply to the same unit, so one target may receive a bonus from more than one relevant modifier. Some tags are visible in the unit description, while others are hidden; the unit’s attack panel is the practical place to check displayed multipliers and penalties.
Why classifications matter in a matchup
A bonus is evaluated against the target’s tags, not simply its appearance or broad role. This explains why two units that look similar can take different damage, and why a technology may improve a narrow class without affecting every troop produced by the same building. When choosing counters, read the target’s listed classifications and the attacker’s bonus rather than relying only on names such as cavalry or mercenary. Tags also connect technologies, cards and unit attributes, so version changes can alter a matchup when a tag or its effect is adjusted.
