Torp

The Torp is the Swedish economic building in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. It provides population space and gathers nearby natural resources, so a well-placed network can convert map access into both housing and income.

Function

Swedish Settlers construct Torps. The building works with resources in its surrounding area, and civilization cards can improve its output or interaction with nearby sources. Its value depends on what is available close enough to gather; a Torp beside depleted or inaccessible resources provides less economic return.

Placement & timing

Scout before placing each Torp and prioritize sites with useful resources that the Swedish economy needs. Keep isolated buildings within reach of defenders, since a raid can disrupt both income and population planning. Spread sites to reach new resources, but avoid extending so far that the army cannot respond.

Swedish resource and population network

Torp is the Swedish Exploration Age economic building, available to Finland after its Revolution. It costs 140 Wood, takes 19 seconds to build and supports population while automatically gathering adjacent resources. The building has 1,300 hit points and can be placed up to 20 times. Swedish Settlers or a Torp Wagon can construct it. Torps convert map access into both housing and income, so scouting the surrounding area is essential: a site beside useful Food, Wood or Coin provides more economic value than one near depleted or unreachable resources. Spread the network to reach new resources but keep isolated Torps within the army’s ability to defend. The 140-Wood cost competes with military buildings and housing, while the population support can reduce the need for separate Houses. Cards may improve output or interactions with nearby sources, so check the Home City deck before planning exact yields. Torps can extend the Swedish economy across the map, but a raid on a forward site can interrupt both resource collection and population planning. Build gradually around the resources the army needs next, and protect high-value sites.

Scouting before placement

A Torp’s value depends on the resources within its area, so reveal the map before spending 140 Wood. Place it near a resource the Swedish economy needs, such as a useful Food source or Coin deposit, then protect the site. Automatic gathering and population support make the building efficient, but a Torp beside depleted resources offers less return. The 20-building limit allows a wide network; spread sites so a raid cannot interrupt every source at once. Finland access follows the Revolution, so check the current faction timing before using a Swedish opening plan. Torp Wagons provide another construction source where available.

Population and resource return

A Torp provides housing while gathering adjacent resources. Choose a site that produces something the Swedish economy needs, and avoid placing it beside depleted sources just to reach the population cap.

Network safety

Spread Torps so one raid cannot disrupt every Swedish resource site. Protect a forward building when its adjacent resources or population capacity are important to the economy.

Swedish economy placement

The 140-Wood cost supports both population and passive resource gathering. Place Torps where the resource is still available and workers or defenders can reach the building safely.

Finland and Revolution

Torp is also available to Finland after its Revolution. Check that timing before applying a Swedish Exploration Age build order to the revolutionary path.

Map-dependent income

Automatic gathering changes with nearby resources and cards. Re-scout before placing a Torp and prioritize a resource cluster that remains safe and useful through the next Age.

Swedish house with automatic gathering

The Torp replaces the ordinary House for the Swedes and is also used by Finland in its Revolution. It costs 140 Wood, takes 19 seconds to build, supports ten population and has a standard limit of 20. When completed, it creates a Berry Bush containing 200 Food and automatically gathers nearby resources. This makes placement an economic decision as well as a housing decision: a Torp near a useful resource can contribute income without assigning a Settler to that task, while a poorly placed Torp may provide little beyond population space. Nearby trees, mines or huntable resources can affect the practical value, so check the site before placing the building. The spawned Berry Bush is a small, finite source and should not be mistaken for a permanent Food engine.

Expand without losing the woodline

Torp construction lets the Swedes spread housing across the map, but the 140-Wood cost competes with production buildings, military options and other early investments. A cluster near several useful resources may make efficient use of the passive gathering, though spreading too far can leave structures exposed to raids. Protect Torps with the army and place later houses on resources the opponent cannot easily deny. Torp Wagons provide a separate construction route, and the Finnish Revolutionary profile should be read in that version’s context. The building’s automatic gathering does not replace ordinary workers or mean every resource source is collected at the same rate. Use it to support the economy at the margin, then assign Settlers where demand remains highest. Swedish cards and technologies can modify Torp value, so account for the active deck and game release when estimating the return from a placement.
