Yoruba Oyo Legionaries' hand attack poisons the enemy

Effect & research conditions

Research costs 150 Wood and 150 Coin and takes 40 seconds. The effect is limited to Yoruba Oyo Legionaries and their hand attacks; it does not affect their ranged or siege attacks, or other Yoruba units. Secure the kingdom settlement and field Legionaries before relying on the change.

Research condition

Available from the Exploration Age. Research it at Trading Post or Tambo on a Yoruba kingdom.

When to research

Research before sending Oyo Legionaries into an extended melee where repeated attacks can apply the poison effect. Keep the unit line supported so it can remain in contact with targets, and avoid assuming the poison helps at range. If the force will not use Legionaries, spend the resources on a broader technology or immediate production instead.

The effect depends on sustained melee contact

Yoruba Ida Swords changes the Oyo Legionary’s hand attack, so the benefit requires the unit to reach and continue attacking its target. Use screening troops to help Legionaries enter combat, then disengage from counters that can remove them quickly. The technology’s 40-second research time is longer than several settlement upgrades; protect the access point during that window. Poison does not make every attack from the Legionary special, so use its normal ranged and siege profiles according to the target.
