When to research
Young Guard combines a delivery with new access: 4 Young Guards; Enables Grenadiers to be trained at Barracks, Artillery Foundries, Forts, and Galleons; Enables Grenadier to be upgraded at Barracks and Artillery Foundries; Enables Artillery Foundries to be built in the Commerce Age. Choose it when the delivered builder or force and the production unlock both support the plan; reserve population, place the structure safely, and budget the later unit queue. Use the Church for research. Research takes 15 seconds and costs 500 food.
Unlock the French Grenadier production line
The Commerce Age French Church research costs 500 Food and takes 15 seconds. It sends four Young Guards, unlocks Grenadiers at Barracks, Artillery Foundries, Forts, and Galleons, and enables their upgrades at Barracks and Artillery Foundries. It also permits Artillery Foundries in Commerce Age and leads to Middle Guard. Keep population and production capacity ready for the new line.
Build the Foundry after unlocking the line
Young Guard’s early Artillery Foundry access and Grenadier unlock let the French add the unit sooner than the standard age schedule. The four-unit shipment is only the first part of the investment; later production and the Middle Guard upgrade require the Church path and safe Foundry access. Protect the building and screen Grenadiers from cavalry.
French access, shipment and upgrade chain
Young Guard is a Church technology that requires the French Home City card Edict of Nantes. It costs 500 Food and takes 15 seconds to research in the Commerce Age. Completion sends four Young Guards to the Home City shipment point and opens the French Grenadier line: Grenadiers can be trained at Barracks, Artillery Foundries, Forts and Galleons, with upgrades available at Barracks and Artillery Foundries. The research also permits an Artillery Foundry in the Commerce Age. Young Guard is the first step in the Guard upgrade sequence, followed by Middle Guard and Old Guard, so researching it establishes both an immediate shipment and a later path to stronger Grenadiers. Leave population room for the arriving units and plan the research before the push that needs them; the technology’s value includes its production unlocks, not only the four-unit delivery.
