The grandest building in Vale Sangora, the cathedral replaced the valley's first church and was originally built in AD 795 under the master builder Abelard the Sorrowful, a Lombard seeking repentance for unrecorded sins.

Abelard died soon after drafting his remarkably detailed plans and never set foot inside his own creation.

The complex grew in AD 1123 with a courtyard, treasury, library and secular workshop, and in AD 1205 when Athanasius of Parlita, Bishop, financed a poorhouse for the destitute.

The cathedral still crowns Svartrau Plaza today, an emblem of the valley's devotion.
