Overview

Build Cao Cao’s influence through strategy and an unsettled imperial court.

Scenario details

Build Cao Cao’s influence through strategy and an unsettled imperial court. Mission order and scenario notes: 1. The Yellow Turban Rebellion — Cao Cao serves as a cavalry commander during the Yellow Turban uprising. Strike rebel positions with the forces and reinforcements available, reclaim nearby villages for supplies, and push through to Zhang Jue’s stronghold 2. Emperor in All but Name — Cao Cao races rival warlords to seize the emperor and gain political authority. Pressure Tao Qian’s settlements to limit the chance of Liu Bei entering the conflict, then break through the defenses protecting the court 3. The Battle of Guandu — The battle has a timed logistics phase followed by a full assault. Use Cao Cao’s mobile force to disrupt Yuan Shao’s supply camps, then defend Guandu and hunt down five commanders as the enemy launches repeated attacks 4. Lord of the North — Cao Cao presses north to secure the region after Yuan Shao’s defeat. Capture Liyang, establish a fortified position in Ye, and overcome the rival brothers who contest control of the northern plains 5. The Battle of Red Cliffs (Cao Cao) — Cao Cao’s army must cross and control the Yangtze before it can subdue the southern warlords. Capture river forts to gain shipbuilding access, disrupt the allied fleet, and open a route to both Sun Quan and Liu Bei Use the named objectives, starting setup, and mission order in this entry to distinguish it from the standard skirmish rules.

Player approach

The Battle of Red Cliffs (Cao Cao) is a naval-control mission that opens a land route against Liu Bei and Sun Quan. Secure River Fortifications early, then grow the fleet before confronting their combined navy.

Step-by-step plan

Start additional Villagers and assign a deliberate wood-and-gold workforce, aiming for enough wood to keep ship production going and roughly ten to fifteen gold workers as the fleet grows. Use starting Light Cavalry to capture nearby River Fortifications immediately, and locate Cai He to restore trade income. Build a large fleet in stages, escorting transports and landing troops only after the river approaches are covered.

Risks and adjustments

The enemy fleets can overwhelm an isolated ship group. Avoid sending transports through contested water without an escort, and maintain the wood supply needed to replace losses rather than spending it all on the first wave.
