Plan and execution
Enter the late game with a food economy able to fund Monk production, and add Monks behind a screened frontline rather than as a replacement for the whole army. Use conversions against expensive cavalry or elephant units and support the push with researched Monastery technologies. Keep a small group near the army to heal or convert priority targets while ordinary production handles routine threats.
Risks and adaptation
Monks still need positioning and attention, and Scout Cavalry can punish exposed groups. Food-based cost does not eliminate the opportunity cost of diverting food from Villagers or military queues. Avoid massing Monks into ranged fire or treating the technology as an automatic win in a trash war.
