Bastion

Bastion is a wall upgrade that greatly increases wall hit points while making construction take longer. It is available from a Wall in the Fortress Age for most listed access, with a Lakota Industrial Age listing, and can also be researched through selected civilization buildings. The longer build time makes the upgrade a deliberate investment in a position expected to last.

Effect

Research takes 60 seconds and costs 600 Wood and 600 Coin. The listed effect is 600% more wall hit points and 80% longer wall construction time. Access includes the Wall, selected Churches, the Ottoman Mosque and the Italian Basilica; the age and building depend on civilization.

Research condition

Available in the Fortress Age*, Industrial Age (Lakota) at Wall, Church (Europeans except Ottomans and Italians) , Mosque (Ottomans) , Basilica (Italians). Research time: 60 seconds. Cost: 600 wood, 600 coin. Civilization-specific building access can vary.

Research decision

Choose it when walls will protect a valuable area through a prolonged fight and workers have time to finish construction. The extended build time makes late emergency walling less attractive; place and complete the defenses before the enemy reaches the line, and keep an army ready to respond to siege.

Build before the attack window

The Fortress Age research costs 600 Wood and 600 Coin, takes 60 seconds, and increases wall hit points by 600% while adding 80% build time. Access varies by civilization, including a later Lakota listing. Begin the work before a siege is imminent and retain troops to protect construction; the stronger wall is useful only if it finishes before attackers arrive.

A costly wall upgrade with a build-time tradeoff

Bastion is a Fortress Age wall technology for many Asian, European and Native American civilizations, with civilization-specific timing exceptions; Lakota research it in the Industrial Age. It costs 600 Wood and 600 Coin, takes 60 seconds and raises wall hit points by 600%, while increasing wall construction time by 80%. That large durability increase can make a prepared defensive line much harder to breach, but it does not create walls or protect the Villagers who must build them. Research it before a likely attack window and start construction early enough to account for the slower build time. European access is through the Church for eligible civilizations, with the Mosque, Basilica, or a Mexican card providing alternate routes. Do not treat the upgrade as a substitute for an army: siege units can still target a wall, and the resources committed to Bastion cannot be spent on units during the same timing.
