The research costs 150 Food and 150 Coin and takes 10 seconds. It applies to units classified as Cavalry or Shock Troops, not every mounted-looking unit or all military units. Check the active unit panel for the relevant classification before expecting the bonus.

When to research
Research when a mobile army contains several affected units and will remain active long enough for extra health to change an engagement. The bonus can help cavalry survive ranged focus fire, but does not change their damage or protect them from dedicated counters. Secure the Comanche site and preserve resources for the units that will benefit.
Durability for a mobile force
The 10% hit-point increase rewards armies that use Cavalry and Shock Troops to move between fights, raid or reinforce a flank. It can make a group harder to remove, but does not improve movement, attack or resistance. Keep the force away from unfavorable anti-cavalry engagements and use its mobility to choose when to fight. The settlement research is inexpensive compared with a large army, but is only worthwhile if the player fields enough units in the affected classes.
