It is researched after choosing the Germans as the Chinese alliance and adds 1.5 Food per second to the player’s resource trickle for the rest of the game. It costs 250 Export and takes 30 seconds; before update 61213 the cost was 200 Export. In Definitive Edition update 20322 its availability moved from Commerce Age to Exploration Age.

Choose the German alliance at the Consulate, reach the required Age and research Food Trickle there. The 1.5 Food-per-second effect is passive income, not a crate or a worker assignment; over one minute it adds 90 Food before other game effects. The research takes 30 seconds and uses the Consulate’s choice, so compare the long-term income with immediate alliance units or another technology. Its 250 Export cost is the current value, not the 200 Export shown in older notes.

When to research
Research it early enough that the passive income has time to accumulate, provided the army can remain stable during the Consulate research. It is more attractive in a sustained game than when an immediate unit shipment or defense decides the opening.
