Role, availability & values
The wagon constructs the Fort at its destination instead of fighting as an ordinary unit. Move it to a legal, defensible site and protect it until construction completes; the Fort then provides a garrison and defensive firing position.
Matchup & timing
Use it to secure forward ground or reinforce a vulnerable base when the shipment is available. Scout the site first so the wagon does not arrive within reach of enemy siege or a concentrated army.
Deploying a free Fort
The Fort Wagon is a WarChiefs-era construction unit that places one Fort for free. It is available in the Fortress Age, moves at speed 3.5, has 500 hit points and line of sight 18. The wagon itself is not a defensive structure; its value comes from safely reaching a legal site and completing the Fort. Scout the area before sending the wagon, choose a position that controls a route or protects an exposed base and escort it until construction finishes. A forward Fort can shorten reinforcement and defend a resource area, but it is vulnerable if placed beyond the army’s support. The Fort Wagon’s free-building ability does not eliminate the time and exposure of travel, and the unit should not be sent alone through enemy territory. Once the Fort is complete, use its defensive range and garrison function to anchor the position, then keep a field army ready for attackers who approach with siege. Access comes through shipments or scenario rules, so confirm when the wagon is available in the selected civilization and mode.
Fort site and escort
Use the Fort Wagon to place a free Fort at a location that will remain useful after the immediate fight. Its 500 hit points and 3.5 speed make the wagon itself vulnerable on the way to the site. Scout the path and escort it with units; a Fort placed too far forward may be destroyed before the army can support it. The Wagon is available in the Fortress Age under the relevant shipment or scenario rules, and the free construction does not remove the strategic cost of leaving the wagon exposed.
Forward defense
A Fort placed forward can protect a route, but the wagon must survive the trip and the Fort needs an army nearby. Build where the structure can support future engagements, not just the current one.
Shipment timing and placement
The Fort Wagon turns access to a free Fort into a question of timing and location. It becomes available in the Fortress Age under the relevant shipment or scenario rules, but travel and construction still expose the wagon to attack. Before sending it, scout a site that protects a resource line, crossing or forward staging point and check that the main army can reach it. Its 500 hit points and speed 3.5 allow it to travel, not withstand a focused attack. Escort it with units and avoid revealing the destination before the route is secure. A forward Fort can shorten reinforcement and force the opponent to respect a defended approach; a Fort placed beyond support can instead become an isolated target for siege. After construction, use the Fort’s garrison and defensive functions to stabilize the position, while keeping mobile troops ready to meet artillery or an enemy attack from another direction. The free building is a powerful shipment reward, but its strategic value depends on surviving deployment and connecting it to the army.
Connect the Fort to reinforcements
The deployment site should remain connected to the force after construction. A Fort can protect units and a route, but an isolated structure may be surrounded and dismantled by siege. Place it within practical support distance of the army, then use the defended area to stage reinforcements or hold ground while the main force advances. If the map or enemy position makes that connection impossible, retain the wagon until a safer site appears.
Defending a forward deployment
A nearby Town Center or army can support the Fort after it is built, but the wagon’s trip remains the vulnerable stage. Avoid crossing exposed ground without an escort, and select a site with enough space for units to gather and move through the defended area.
Rapid Fort construction from a shipment
A Fort Wagon builds a Fort three times faster than an ordinary builder in the documented profile. This can establish a forward strongpoint or secure a resource zone before the opponent can react. If the foundation is destroyed or the player deletes it after construction has begun, the wagon is lost, so protect the site and choose the location carefully.
Support the Fort after the wagon is consumed
The wagon’s value is the speed and resource timing it creates, but a Fort still needs an army and a clear purpose. Place it where the structure can protect production or a Trade Route, then rally units to defend the new position. Do not send the wagon alone into enemy territory, and account for the Home City Card or scenario that provides it. Once building starts, preserve the foundation until completion.
