Matchup & timing

Use the Neftenya’s range-20 attack to keep an Ethiopian firing line at a safe distance and focus targets covered by its 2.5× multipliers. The base shot is 14 damage with a three-second interval, so preserve volleys and avoid letting Cavalry reach the unit. Check the active War Camp, Fort or ship access before planning a reinforcement route.

Ethiopian ranged infantry profile

Neftenya is an Ethiopian Fortress Age ranged unit. It costs 65 Food and 65 Coin, trains in 33 seconds, occupies one population and has 140 hit points with 30% ranged resistance. Its ranged attack deals 14 damage at range 20 every three seconds; it has 2.5× bonuses against Light ranged cavalry and ranged shock troops and 2× against Heavy infantry, but deals reduced damage to Cavalry and Shock troops. The War Camp, Fort, Battle Canoe and American Citadel can provide access. Its hand attack deals eight damage, and the siege attack deals 12 at range six. Use Neftenya behind a durable screen against its target classes and keep cavalry away from the firing line. The 30% ranged resistance helps it absorb ranged fire, but its reduced Cavalry and Shock troop multipliers mean it still needs protection from units that can close.

Patch changes to range and counters

Earlier Neftenya profiles list 15 ranged damage and a Coin-only cost of 70; later updates brought the attack to 14 and added Food to the cost, with the current profile at 65 Food and 65 Coin. Its ranged multiplier against light cavalry and ranged shock troops increased to 2.5×, while Cavalry and Shock troop penalties moved to 0.6×. It is tagged as Light infantry in later patches. These changes matter when using old build orders: the modern unit is a 14-damage, 65/65 Fortress Age rifleman with 30% ranged resistance.

Using the unit in a mixed army

Neftenya’s bonuses make it a back-line answer to heavy infantry and light ranged cavalry, but its reduced damage against Cavalry and Shock troops creates a clear screening requirement. Pair it with units that can hold those fast attackers away, and issue focus-fire orders when several target classes are present. Its 20-range shot gives it room to operate behind the front, while the three-second interval makes losing firing time costly. The unit costs 65 Food and 65 Coin, so it competes with other Fortress Age investments; compare the immediate need for ranged damage with the price of adding a War Camp or upgrading the force. It can also be produced or accessed through a Fort, Battle Canoe or American Citadel when those options are available. Current Definitive Edition values differ from older records, so older build orders showing 70 Coin-only cost or 15 ranged damage do not describe the current 65/65, 14-damage profile.
