Overview
Cistern and Aqueduct networks strengthen the economy and nearby production. Olive Oil generated by gathering and trade pays for mercenary contracts, giving this civilization an unusually flexible army.
Use in play
Build the Cistern network where Villagers and production buildings can benefit together. Use Mercenary House contracts to complement the core Byzantine roster rather than assuming every match needs the same unit mix.
Cistern economy
Cisterns form an Aqueduct network. Cistern levels and connected buildings support the civilization’s distinctive infrastructure bonuses, so the value comes from placing useful buildings within the network rather than constructing disconnected cisterns. Olive Oil is generated through the Byzantine economy and can be spent on Mercenary House contracts.
Mercenaries and battlefield roles
The Mercenary House turns Olive Oil into contract units drawn from regional rosters. These hires can fill a gap in a force or complement Byzantine units; their availability is tied to the chosen contract. Cheirosiphons and other Greek Fire options provide siege or area pressure, while Limitanei and other infantry help protect vulnerable ranged and siege units.
