Overview

Research economic technologies early when the discounted timing is worth more than immediate military spending, then convert the lead into durable cavalry and Coustillier charges. Keep a safe fallback if the opponent contests the economy.

Opening decision and first timing

Early economic technologies are tempting, but research one only when enough workers can use it before the next fight. Scout pressure before investing in an upgrade that postpones units. Discounted Stable research and Castle Age Cavalier create a clear mounted timing if food, gold, and Stable production are ready as the advance completes.

Composition, counters, and transition

Coustilliers reward choosing a fight, delivering their charge, and pulling back before an unfavorable prolonged exchange. Support them against Spearmen and avoid sacrificing the economic lead for a single raid. In longer games the gunpowder bonus widens the army options; Flemish Revolution is a major commitment, so use it only with a concrete attack or defensive objective and a plan for rebuilding the economy.

Opening priorities

Choose early economic research selectively: an upgrade only pays off when enough Villagers can benefit from it. Protect the transition with scouting and a small defensive force.

Core army

Use cavalry to exploit the economy lead and Coustilliers for decisive charge damage. Add infantry or ranged support when enemy spears and Monks make pure cavalry inefficient.

Technology & transition

Burgundian Vineyards and Flemish Revolution offer late-game options with very different economic consequences. Choose them only when the current stockpile and battlefield justify the commitment.

Watch for

Early upgrades compete with units and age advancement. Avoid investing in several technologies at once while leaving the base exposed.
