American Citadel Travois
American Citadel Travois is a mobile construction unit that builds an American Citadel for free at its destination. It is a special infrastructure reward that lets the player establish a fortified position without paying the structure’s ordinary resource cost.

Role, availability & values
The Travois has 500 hit points and moves at 4.0 speed. It must reach a legal site and complete construction before the Citadel can protect the area. The wagon is not a combat unit, and its ability does not make the finished structure immune to attack.
Matchup & timing
Choose a site that protects a valuable route or supports the army’s next objective. Scout before sending the Travois and escort it across contested ground. Build only where the force can help defend the Citadel against siege, so the free structure has time to contribute.
Unlock, build time and civilization access
This Commerce Age construction wagon appears after Maya Pyramids is researched and transforms into an American Citadel. The build takes 50 seconds; the Travois itself has 500 hit points, 4.0 speed and 18 line of sight. The Aztecs can receive one through the Oztuma Citadel Home City Card, which also increases their American Citadel build limit by one, to a total of two. A Mexican player who revolts to Maya can access Maya Pyramids at the Native Embassy. The wagon’s name changed in Definitive Edition update 14.43676: before that update it was called Maya Castle Travois, while the structure is now called American Citadel. This history explains why older guides may use the earlier name. Since the free structure still takes time to construct and can be attacked, send the wagon with an escort and choose a site whose defense supports the army’s next position.
Maya Pyramids unlock
The American Citadel Travois is a construction wagon in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. It becomes available after researching Maya Pyramids and transforms into an American Citadel at no additional building-resource cost. The wagon has 500 hit points, speed 4, 18 line of sight and 20% siege resistance; construction takes 50 seconds. It is therefore a durable delivery unit for a substantial fortification, rather than a normal worker or a combat unit intended to fight.
Civilization-specific access
The Aztecs can receive a Travois through the Oztuma Citadel Home City Card, which also raises their American Citadel build limit by one, to two. The unit’s earlier name, Maya Castle Travois, changed with an update, so current references should use American Citadel Travois. Scout the location before dispatching it and protect the wagon during its journey and construction. Since the resulting Citadel is free to place but the unlock and shipment are part of a larger strategy, use it where the fortification can protect a valuable approach or support the army.
