Role, availability & values

Settlers hunt Deer and gather Food from the carcass; the recorded data supports up to eight gatherers. The herd is finite and can be herded toward a safer location before it is killed. Map generation determines where the animals begin.

Matchup & timing

Use Deer near the Town Center for early Food while scouting for replacement Hunts. Protect workers as the herd is depleted and the gathering line moves outward. Herding can shorten a dangerous walk, but do so before the animal is killed.

Huntable profile and food economy

In Age of Empires III, Deer is a neutral huntable animal with 20 hit points, 2.0 speed, 18 line of sight and 400 Food per carcass; the unit profile allows up to eight gatherers. The source describes it as a white-tailed deer and notes that it can be brought down in two shots, or one with the Blunderbuss upgrade. Compared with a Berry Bush, a Deer carcass provides a larger concentrated Food reserve, but the herd is finite and may be farther from the Town Center than a safe early source. Scout the surrounding ground first, then position Villagers so they can gather without blocking movement or becoming an easy raid target. A Mill becomes a useful fallback when nearby wildlife runs out. The Wiki also lists wildlife gathering rates for Shrine and Hacienda systems: 0.0665 resources per second for Shrine, and Hacienda rates of 0.166667 Food, 0.25 Wood and 0.113334 Coin per second. Those are building-based trickle values, not the rate at which Villagers butcher Deer; keep the two mechanics separate when estimating an economy.
