Effect
Line of sight determines what the artillery unit can reveal around itself; the technology does not extend its attack range. Keep guns behind a screen even with the improved vision, since sight alone does not protect them from a flank.
Research condition
Available in the Commerce Age at Arsenal. Research time: 30 seconds. Cost: 100 food, 100 coin. Civilization-specific building access can vary.
Research decision
Research before artillery must watch an approach or support a moving army from behind the frontline. It is less useful when guns are parked where other units already provide vision.
Artillery line of sight
Gunner’s Quadrant is a Commerce Age Arsenal technology for Africans, Europeans, Federal Americans and Japanese. It costs 100 Food and 100 Coin and takes 30 seconds, increasing artillery line of sight by six. African civilizations pay 180 Influence instead of Coin.
Spot targets before the enemy closes
The extra vision does not increase range, damage or durability. Research when the army fields artillery that can use the information, and keep the guns protected from fast units. Check Arsenal access and the civilization-specific price.
Six more line of sight does not mean six more range
Gunner’s Quadrant adds six line of sight to Artillery. Line of sight controls what the unit can reveal around itself; the technology does not extend the distance at which the gun can attack. That distinction matters when positioning a Culverin, Falconet or other eligible artillery: improved vision can help identify an approaching force or maintain awareness around a firing position, but it does not let the weapon shoot a target outside its normal attack range. A screen is still needed to stop fast units from reaching the guns.
Research for a force that benefits from its own vision
The Arsenal research is most useful when artillery is operating with limited nearby vision or moving behind the army and needs to reveal its surroundings. It is less valuable when other units already provide vision over the same ground. Check which artillery is present before spending on the upgrade, then use the added sight to monitor an approach and adjust the escort. It does not increase damage, hit points or attack range, so choose a different improvement when the army’s limiting factor is firepower or survival rather than information.
