Role & counters
Lancers are trained at the Stable and can also arrive through Spanish Home City shipments. Their anti-infantry multiplier makes them effective against exposed foot units, while Pikemen, Musketeers and concentrated fire can stop them. Their role is different from cavalry designed to counter other mounted units.
When to field it
Scout for anti-cavalry before committing. Use a flank or supporting pressure to reach infantry, then pull back if the enemy forms a compact counter line. Protect Lancers while they reposition and avoid leaving them under sustained fire.
Anti-infantry heavy cavalry
The Spanish Lancer becomes available in the Fortress Age and costs 110 Food and 90 Coin for a two-population unit. It has 350 hit points, moves at 6.5 speed, and deals 20 hand damage every 1.5 seconds with a 3× multiplier against Infantry. That specialization differs from cavalry whose main purpose is to counter other mounted units: Lancers want a path into ranged infantry, while Pikemen and Musketeers can punish their approach. Use a flank or combine them with pressure that occupies the anti-cavalry screen. Their six-range siege attack can help against buildings, but they remain a costly mobile combat unit rather than a substitute for dedicated artillery. Preserve them between fights so the Spanish army can repeat the threat.
