AI identity & army profile

Early groups can feature Pikemen and Skirmishers; later forces may add Falconets, Horse Artillery where available, Halberdiers, Hussars and Mercenaries. The exact force depends on the scenario and game rules. His Dutch identity also means the army can benefit from the civilization’s economic and unit systems as the match develops.

How to prepare

Scout his production and prepare for a composition that changes over time. Use anti-infantry troops against ranged infantry, protect artillery from cavalry, and keep anti-cavalry units ready for Hussars. Do not queue a single counter indefinitely; respond to the units actually appearing on the field.

Dutch AI personality

Maurice of Nassau is the Dutch AI personality in Age of Empires III. The character is based on the Prince of Orange who ruled from 1618 to 1625 and is voiced by Ivar Brogger. In game he is confident and courteous, even when treating an allied player as a “little upstart.” His personality is strongly tied to the Dutch economy: he prioritizes money and economic growth over an early all-in attack. At the beginning of some matches he may offer 200 Coin to persuade the player to resign, reflecting the character’s focus on bargaining and wealth.

Early army and Dutch economy

Maurice’s early army often combines Pikemen and Skirmishers, taking advantage of the Dutch access to those units early. He tends to turtle while the Dutch economy develops, although he can attack on higher difficulties. This makes early pressure useful if it can reach exposed production, but a reckless attack into Outposts may let him continue banking Coin. Scout whether the AI is spending on military units or consolidating its Banks, then decide whether to disrupt the economy or prepare for a larger later army.

Later army composition

If Maurice survives into later ages, he usually fields Falconets and may add Horse Artillery, Halberdiers and Hussars. Mercenaries can appear when available, while Ruyters are often present in smaller numbers. This combination pairs ranged siege with heavy infantry and mobile cavalry support. Bring a way to counter Artillery and keep anti-Cavalry units available for Hussars. A force composed only of Light Infantry may struggle against the Halberdiers and Cavalry that protect the guns.

Defensive strategy and economy

Maurice builds multiple Outposts around his settlement early and is one of the AI personalities that uses Fortified Outposts. His defensive ring can make a direct attack expensive, so scout for gaps and bring siege support before committing. The Dutch Banks and Factories give his AI a strong Coin economy, second only to Napoleon in the source profile. That income supports Coin-intensive mercenaries and artillery. However, he can neglect Food, which may slow reinforcement of Food-heavy troops. Sustained pressure on the economy can expose that imbalance.

Counter the AI’s pacing

The safest response is to read Maurice’s timing. If he stays behind the Outpost ring, use the opening to secure resources and produce counters rather than repeatedly feeding units into the fortifications. If he advances with Falconets, target the artillery or disrupt its escort before it reaches the base. His defensive style can leave open map control to the player, but allowing Banks and Factories to operate unchallenged gives him time to build a larger force. Attack when the army is separated or take the map resources that fund his preferred composition.

Recognize his defensive tempo

Maurice’s Outposts and Dutch Banks can make the opening feel quiet while his economy builds. Do not mistake the lack of an early rush for a weak opponent. Take safe map resources, scout the defensive ring and prepare siege before entering it. On higher difficulty he may attack sooner, so keep enough units to defend workers even while planning a counterattack. A single failed push can give the Dutch AI time to convert Coin income into Falconets and mercenaries.

Break the Outpost ring

Maurice often places Outposts around his settlement and may upgrade them to Fortified Outposts. Identify the side with the thinnest coverage and attack a structure that opens a path to Banks or military production. Bring Culverins or other artillery counters if the AI has Falconets, and use Heavy Infantry to screen Hussars. Avoid grouping the entire army under several Outposts at once; advance in a way that limits how many defensive structures can fire on the same target.

Watch his resource balance

Banks and Factories give Maurice a strong Coin supply and support his use of Mercenaries and Artillery. The AI may neglect Food, which can limit replacement of Food-heavy units during a prolonged fight. Pressure the economy and force repeated trades rather than allowing it to build a fully upgraded army at leisure. If the Dutch force contains many Coin-heavy units, cutting access to safe mines or disrupting Banks can reduce the pace of future reinforcements.

Allied personality and diplomacy

When Maurice is an ally, his economic focus can make him a useful source of resource support, but he may prioritize his own Dutch development. His dialogue is self-assured and respectful even when he uses teasing language. Resource requests or offers are part of the AI personality system and do not describe a guaranteed amount of aid in every match. Coordinate attacks after the Dutch army has assembled; the same defensive patience that slows an enemy Maurice can also delay an allied push.

Use the gaps in a strong economy

Maurice’s Banks and Factories make Coin plentiful, while Food can be neglected. If he remains behind the Outpost ring, contest map hunts and other Food sources so the Dutch AI cannot develop every part of its economy at once. When the army does advance, target Falconets and Horse Artillery while screening Hussars. Taking down an Outpost can open a path to Banks, but avoid trading units beneath the entire ring. His strong defenses reward patience and deliberate siege.

Push when the defense is incomplete

Maurice’s defensive ring is most dangerous once its Outposts and artillery support are established. Scout early and attack an exposed production site before the AI finishes its perimeter.

How the commander changes the battle

Maurice is an AI-controlled ally rather than a unit the player directly commands. His contribution is strongest when the player gives his army time to gather and then coordinates an attack with it. On higher difficulty settings, he uses more aggressive tactics and can provide a substantial force, but the player should still defend their own economy and objectives instead of assuming the allied army will handle every threat. Keep the enemy occupied near Maurice's troops while your own army reaches a different approach or secures the map.

Dutch AI personality and economic tendencies

Maurice of Nassau is the Dutch AI personality in Age of Empires III, voiced by Ivar Brogger. He is self-assured but generally gentlemanly, and he often speaks about economics and making money. The Dutch economy and unit choices can develop around its Bank system, but his personality lines should not be treated as proof of a particular resource balance. Check Banks, production and age timing directly. Difficulty and map resources can change how quickly the Dutch force grows.

Pressure the Banks and protect your own economy

When facing a Dutch opponent, identify where Banks and military buildings are placed and whether the army is being funded by a long-term economic plan. Raiding exposed Villagers and denying safe map control can delay that plan, but avoid costly attacks into a defended base. If Maurice is an ally, support the Bank economy by securing routes and defending the territory around it. The Dutch AI’s economic voice lines add character; the practical response comes from scouting and unit counters.
