Effect & research conditions

Research at a Rice Paddy; it costs 400 Food and 400 Wood and takes 30 seconds. Its 20% Villager bonus applies only to the named Coin sources, not to Rice Paddy Food gathering or all economic work. Rice Markets is the next upgrade in the chain. Rice Trade and later technologies are available to the Asian civilizations under the relevant rules; Hacienda effects apply where a Hacienda is part of the civilization’s economy.

Research condition

Fortress Age; Rice Paddy; requires Rice Surplus

When to research

Research after Rice Surplus when the economy has workers on the affected Coin sources or an active Hacienda income stream. The 400 Food and 400 Wood cost is easier to recover when many workers can use the bonus for a sustained period. If the economy primarily uses Mines, this technology’s listed source coverage may not justify delaying units.

The first step of a three-stage chain

Rice Trade unlocks the progression to Rice Markets and later Rice Exports. It is available after Rice Surplus in the Fortress Age, while its two listed successors continue the chain into later Ages. Keep the prerequisites and 30-second research windows in the economy plan; skipping the first stage means the later Paddy upgrades cannot be accessed through this route.

Coin sources, not general gathering

The 20% increase applies to Villagers collecting Coin from Estates, Rice Paddies, Fields and Haciendas; Hacienda automatic Coin gathering also rises by 20%. It does not make the Paddy produce Food faster. Place workers according to the source you want to improve and compare its output with Mine gathering before spending the resources.
