Role, availability & values

Production is available through Trading Post or Tambo on a House of Bourbon palace or Native Embassy. It has 160 hit points. It moves at 4.5 speed. Training costs 75 Food and 40 Coin; it takes 30 seconds to train. Attack profile: Ranged attack: 22 damage at range 12; every 3.0 seconds. Siege attack: 16 damage at range 6; every 3.0 seconds. Hand attack: 20 damage; every 1.5 seconds. Pistol attack (charged): 44 damage at range 12; every 3.0 seconds. Special ability or role: Pistol Attack.

Matchup & timing

Keep Royal Musketeers in range 12 to use their 22-damage shot, then rely on the 20-damage bayonet when Cavalry or Shock troops close. The charged pistol delivers 44 damage but recharges for 60 seconds, so time it for a dangerous target rather than using it as a repeated attack. Protect the Bourbon palace access that supplies the unit.

Role and recruitment

The Royal Musketeer is a Commerce Age gunpowder heavy infantry native warrior unlocked through a House of Bourbon palace. A Trading Post or Tambo on the palace grants recruitment, and a Native Embassy may train it where the rules allow. The current standard profile costs 75 Food and 40 Coin, takes 30 seconds and has a cap of 15 per palace. It has 160 hit points, 30% hand resistance, speed 4.5 and line of sight 16. The unit combines a musket with a fast rapier attack and a charged pistol ability, giving it more close-combat defense than a conventional Musketeer.

Attacks and charged pistol

Its ranged attack deals 22 damage at range 12 every three seconds. The hand attack deals 20 damage every 1.5 seconds, with a 2× multiplier against cavalry and 1.6× against shock troops. The pistol attack automatically charges on a 60-second cooldown and fires for 44 ranged damage at up to range 12. This burst can help finish a dangerous unit, but it is not continuously available, so do not build a plan around firing it every engagement. The siege attack deals 16 damage at range 6 in the current profile. Use musket fire as the default and enter melee when cavalry or shock troops reach the line; the pistol is a timed bonus rather than a replacement for sustained damage.

Comparison with the Musketeer

The ordinary Musketeer costs 75 Food and 25 Coin, trains in the same 30 seconds and has 150 hit points. Its ranged attack is 23 damage every three seconds, slightly higher than the Royal Musketeer’s 22. The Royal version costs 15 more Coin, but has 10 more hit points, 30% hand resistance in the current profile and a stronger 20-damage rapier attack. Its cavalry bonus is 2× rather than the Musketeer’s stronger standard bonus, and it moves at 4.5 rather than 4.0. The Royal Musketeer is therefore more resilient and mobile in close contact, but the ordinary Musketeer can be more efficient as a direct ranged anti-cavalry line depending on the matchup.

Strengths, counters and support

The Royal Musketeer can handle cavalry and shock troops better than many heavy infantry units once enemies reach melee range, and its hand resistance helps it remain in the fight. It is still heavy infantry and vulnerable to light infantry such as Skirmishers, as well as artillery. A long-ranged infantry partner can pressure those counters while Royal Musketeers protect the formation. Avoid charging them into a Skirmisher line simply because they have a strong rapier; heavy infantry can be kited and damaged before it closes. Use their movement speed and palace access to reinforce a mobile frontline, then focus ranged fire on the opponent’s counter units.

Revolutionary France variant

Revolutionary France can obtain the Foot Carabinier after sending Napoleonic Era in the applicable Definitive Edition rules. It replaces Royal Musketeers on the map, at the Native Embassy and at Trading Posts on Bourbon palaces, including those from Ancien Régime. The Foot Carabinier is upgraded to Veteran and Royal Guard, gains additional hit points and damage and replaces the charged Pistol Attack with a Grenade Launcher ability. This is a Revolution-specific transformation, not a standard French Barracks upgrade. The card changes both the unit’s role and how existing Royal Musketeers function, so plan the timing before committing to their production.

Upgrades and recruitment planning

The palace’s limit of 15 units constrains mass production, so use the Royal Musketeer as a targeted addition rather than assuming an unlimited infantry line. Protect the Bourbon Trading Post or Tambo and keep Food and Coin available for training. Native warrior upgrades, civilization cards and general infantry improvements can strengthen the unit, but their availability depends on the chosen civilization and mode. Because it is available from the Commerce Age, it can appear earlier than many specialized native warriors; that timing is valuable if the opponent is already making cavalry. If the palace is contested or the enemy’s main force is light infantry, invest in a different composition instead.

Version and update differences

The Royal Musketeer belongs to Knights of the Mediterranean and the Definitive Edition ruleset. Its hand resistance and siege damage have changed in updates; the cited current profile lists 30% hand resistance and 16 siege damage, whereas earlier versions used higher values. The Foot Carabinier transformation was also added through later card content. Original Age of Empires III and The WarChiefs do not include the same Bourbon palace unit system. When using older guides, confirm the update and distinguish the Royal Musketeer from the ordinary Musketeer and Revolutionary Foot Carabinier.

Cooldown use and battle rhythm

The Pistol Attack’s 60-second cooldown means it may fire only once in a short skirmish. Let it recharge between engagements and use the shot on a durable, high-value target within its range rather than spending it on a nearly defeated unit. In a long battle, the ability can become available again, but the unit must survive and remain close enough to fire. Keep the Royal Musketeers at ranged distance while enemy infantry is present, then let the rapier protect them when cavalry or shock troops reach the line. The attack pattern changes according to the opposing unit: sustained musket fire is the reliable default, while the pistol is a timed burst.

Population-efficient army support

The Royal Musketeer occupies the heavy-infantry role without the special high population cost associated with some mercenary units, but its palace cap limits how many can be added. A small group can protect artillery or ranged infantry from cavalry while contributing musket damage. It should not replace dedicated Skirmishers against heavy infantry or dedicated cavalry against artillery. If the opponent attacks with light infantry, use cavalry or artillery to clear the threat; the Royal Musketeer’s resistance and hit points only extend its survival and do not reverse its counter relationship.

Selecting a Bourbon palace

The palace site determines whether the Royal Musketeer is worth pursuing. Scout the House of Bourbon location before investing, then consider whether the route is defensible and whether the settlement gives access to other useful units or technologies. A central Trading Post can be contested, while a safer site may delay reinforcement. Do not send builders without an escort if the opponent is already controlling the area. Once access is secured, keep the production site protected so a limited group can be replenished after the first battle.

Quick matchup guide

Use Royal Musketeers to add ranged pressure and close-combat protection against cavalry and shock troops. Support them with longer-range infantry against heavy infantry and with artillery or cavalry against light infantry. The pistol shot is a periodic burst; do not assume it is ready in every fight.

Use the unit without overcommitting

The Royal Musketeer is an early palace option with both ranged damage and a close-combat response. A small group can cover a vulnerable artillery line or discourage cavalry from diving into ranged infantry. The 15-unit cap and Food-Coin cost mean it is best selected for the opponent’s composition, not built automatically. Maintain a longer-ranged partner against enemy heavy infantry and preserve a route to the Bourbon palace for reinforcements.

Cooldown reminder

The pistol reloads for 60 seconds, so time it for a high-value target.

Protect the palace route

A lost Bourbon site interrupts access to this capped native unit.

Ranged first

Use musket fire before entering melee with cavalry or shock troops.

Protect against artillery

Heavy guns remain a direct threat; screen them with cavalry or counter-artillery.

Short engagement plan

Use a small group to hold the line, then reinforce only if the matchup stays favorable.

Matchup reminder

Aim for cavalry.

Screen first

Do not enter melee alone.

Bourbon settlement cap and pistol timing

A Royal Musketeer costs 75 Food and 40 Coin, trains in 30 seconds and is limited to 15 per House of Bourbon palace. Its profile has 160 hit points, 30% hand resistance and speed 4.5. The ordinary ranged attack deals 22 damage at range 12 every three seconds, while the 20-damage hand attack fires every 1.5 seconds and gains 2× against Cavalry and 1.6× against Shock troops. The Pistol Attack is a charged shot that deals 44 damage at range 12 and recharges in 60 seconds. Use the normal ranged attack to maintain pressure, then spend the charge on an important target rather than wasting it on a low-value unit. The Native roster cap means losses are not instantly replaced from one palace, so keep the alliance secure and use the Embassy route where available. Its low resource cost does not remove its need for support against artillery and anti-Infantry units.

Role beside ordinary Musketeers

The Royal Musketeer shares a Heavy Infantry identity with the ordinary Musketeer but has a different recruitment route, stat profile and special attack. The unit is available from a House of Bourbon settlement in the Commerce Age and is also connected to Revolutionary France’s roster; it is not simply a French Barracks unit. Its ranged shot and charged Pistol Attack can help it pressure a target before the enemy reaches melee, while the hand multiplier makes it useful against Cavalry and Shock troops. Keep it with units that can threaten artillery and longer-ranged Infantry, and avoid splitting the capped group into isolated posts. Before selecting the Bourbon alliance, compare the Royal Musketeer with the settlement’s other units and technologies. The correct choice depends on whether the army needs a durable screen, an anti-cavalry unit or a source of ranged damage that can be reinforced from the Embassy.
