Unknown
Unknown is a random map in Age of Empires III, available since patch 1.07. Its defining feature is that terrain and map ingredients vary from match to match: snow or desert, land or water, Trade Routes, Native settlements and different resource layouts can all appear. Definitive Edition update 13.27885 added the LOST and Survival variants. The map is intentionally unpredictable, so the selected mode and generated layout determine which plans are practical.

Generated map character
Generations can include ocean and naval opportunities, a guaranteed naval buoy for each player when water is present, different treasure sets, unusual terrain, inaccessible areas and even cave systems. Definitive Edition matches can also start players with a random selection of bonus units, heroes, wagons or travois, Settlers and resource crates. Common examples include Outpost and Dock Wagons, while some starts provide economic builders such as a Village Rickshaw, Livestock Market Builder or Hacienda Wagon. These map-specific starting gifts and units should not be assumed to belong to a civilization’s normal roster.
What can vary
Scout the actual opening before locking into a build order. Identify water and fishing access, the position of any naval buoy, nearby resources, route sites and Native settlements, then spend starting crates and use bonus units where they support the generated map. Do not send a Dock or invest in ships if the layout offers no useful coastline; likewise, do not ignore an open Trade Route or safe water economy when it is present. In LOST or Survival, read the variant’s specific objective and rules before applying a standard random-map plan.
Reading an Unknown map generation
Unknown can vary so widely that scouting is part of the opening build order. Check whether the generated landscape contains a useful coastline, naval buoy, Trade Route, Native settlement, treasure cluster or unusually restricted land route. These details change what a starting Dock Wagon, Outpost Wagon or bonus hero is worth. Resource placement also affects whether a standard hunting, mining and logging plan is safe, while caves and inaccessible terrain can create funnels or hidden travel routes. Record which opportunities actually appear before committing to a deck or moving the army far from the settlement. The map’s name describes the variable setup; it does not mean that every generated round has all of its listed possibilities.
Special variants and opening gifts
Definitive Edition added the LOST and Survival variants to the Unknown map family in update 13.27885. They alter the opening rules and should be treated as their own map entries rather than as ordinary random Unknown layouts. Some regular generations also grant random starting units, heroes, wagons, travois, Settlers or resource crates. These are scenario setup gifts, not permanent civilization bonuses, so do not assume that the same unit will appear in the next match. Use the starting gift immediately if it provides a builder or a map-control advantage, but keep enough units at home to protect the economy. Before loading a familiar build, confirm the variant and lobby settings.
