Role & counters

War Dogs fight at close range and can pressure vulnerable targets, but their availability and shipment rules vary by civilization and version. They are not a general replacement for military production and should be preserved when their early scouting support remains useful.

When to field it

Use them alongside the Explorer to scout and secure manageable Treasures or to deter exposed early units. Avoid sending a small pack into concentrated fire or a prepared military force.

Early Explorer support, not a standing army

War Dogs are available through an Explorer in the Exploration Age and cost 80 Food each. At 85 hit points, 5.0 speed and 15 hand damage, they can accompany the hero on a Treasure route, help defeat manageable guardians and pressure isolated early targets. Their attack has only a small bonus against Guardians and a severe penalty against Villagers, so they should not be treated as ordinary military infantry. The unit’s value is highest before opponents establish full production; later, preserve it for scouting or guard clearing instead of trading it into a trained army. Civilization and Home City rules govern access, so check the active roster before planning a War Dog opening.
