Role & counters

Yumi Archers can focus on Musketeers and similar Heavy Infantry. Ashigaru Musketeers or Samurai can protect them at close range, while terrain and line of sight determine whether the archers can fire safely. They do not replace mobile units needed to answer enemy cavalry or artillery.

When to field it

Keep Yumi Archers behind a screen and focus their attacks on suitable Heavy Infantry. Reposition if artillery threatens a clustered group, and maintain mobile support against Cavalry flanks. Their value is highest when they can fire continuously without being forced into melee.

Japanese ranged line and target selection

The Yumi Archer costs 55 Food and 50 Wood, takes 28 seconds to train and uses one population at the Japanese Barracks from the Commerce Age. Its ranged attack deals 19 damage at a maximum range of 18 and carries a 1.5× multiplier against Heavy Infantry, making it useful when the opponent fields a dense foot line. Ashigaru Musketeers or Samurai can occupy the close fight while Yumi Archers keep firing from behind them. The unit has 100 hit points and is still vulnerable to artillery and Cavalry that reach its position; its ranged resistance does not make it a frontline tank. Focus a suitable target, keep a mobile screen nearby and spread the formation if enemy guns can hit several archers at once.
