When to research
Choose this when a European army will repeatedly recruit Outlaws: the upgrade changes their hit points, damage and training time, with additional scaling for later Ages and Treasure Guardians. Research at a Tavern or Lombard before paying for a large group, and preserve Food and Wood if the army needs immediate conventional units.
Outlaw upgrades and later Age scaling
Folk Heroes is a Fortress Age technology at the Tavern or Lombard for European civilizations. It costs 250 Food and 250 Wood and takes 30 seconds. Outlaws gain 20% hit points and damage and train 50% faster. In the Industrial Age, Outlaws and Treasure Guardians receive a 30% hit-point and damage increase; the corresponding Imperial Age increase is 50%. This combines a direct Outlaw improvement with stronger later scaling for both listed groups.
Build around the units it affects
The training-time reduction is useful only when the Tavern or Lombard is producing Outlaws. The combat bonuses help if the army will continue to field them, while the Treasure Guardian effect is not a general bonus to regular military units. Check the match’s Age and available roster before paying: an early Outlaw plan can use the production benefit immediately, whereas later Age bonuses require the game to progress and appropriate units to be present.
