Function & construction

The Granary’s benefit depends on nearby Food sources and the Villagers gathering from them. Its local effect is most useful when Hunts or Fields are within reach; a building placed far from workers or available food contributes less. The exact civilization options should be checked in the active technology tree.

Placement & timing

Scout for a safe site near useful Hunts or Fields before construction. Keep gathering workers within the area supported by the Granary, and protect the site if the opponent can raid the Food line. Reposition the economy toward another food cluster when the local sources are exhausted.

Food aura and African research options

The Granary is a free African economic building with 600 hit points and a small 1 line of sight. Its passive Food Storage aura attracts huntable animals and increases nearby Food and Field gathering by 10%. Fields constructed near a Granary finish in 40 seconds instead of 60, which makes the two structures work particularly well together. It can hold up to twenty gatherers in the recorded profile and takes 30 seconds to build. At the Granary, Village Dogs costs 50 Wood and improves gathering from hunted animals by 5%. In the Commerce Age, Snares costs 100 Wood and 100 Coin and adds 10% hunted-animal gathering, requiring Village Dogs; Subsistence Farming and Crop Rotation each cost 300 Wood and improve Food-Field or Coin-Field gathering by 10%. The building is free, but its value depends on useful resources being close enough to benefit from the aura. Place it by a safe hunt or Field cluster, then research only the upgrades that match the available food source.

Building the African food cluster

Granaries belong to the Ethiopian and Hausa economy and cost no resources, but Villagers still need time and a safe site to build one. Its passive aura draws huntable animals toward the structure and improves nearby Food and Field gathering by 10%. Because it affects nearby workers, it is more useful beside a hunt or Field than at the edge of the settlement with no food production nearby. The Granary also hosts hunting and farming research: Village Dogs improves animal gathering by 5% for 50 Wood; Snares adds 10% for 100 Wood and 100 Coin after Village Dogs; later-age options improve Food or Coin gathering from Fields. Its relationship with the Field is especially practical: Fields build faster nearby, reducing their construction period from 60 to 40 seconds. A player can therefore establish a compact food economy around one Granary and shift the Field’s configured resource as the army changes.
