Japan campaign
The Japan campaign is one of three independent storylines in The Asian Dynasties. It follows General Kichiro through the political struggle preceding the Tokugawa shogunate. Its missions combine Japanese forces and setting with scenario-specific objectives, rather than forming another act in the Black family story.

Setting & objective
Some missions allow a base and use Japanese systems such as Shrines, Villagers and Wonder age-ups; others begin with fixed forces and scripted goals. The available economy and unit production therefore depend on the particular scenario. Read each briefing before assuming that the standard Japanese random-map opening is possible.
How to approach it
Use Shrines and Wonder choices when the mission provides an economy and enough time for their benefits. In tactical missions, preserve the starting force and complete the required objective before chasing optional fights. The campaign can be played separately from the China and India storylines.
Campaign structure and scenario sequence
Act I: Japan is the first of the three historical campaigns in The Asian Dynasties. It covers five playable scenarios—The Siege of Osaka, Uprising!, Clearing the Road, Last Stand at Fushimi, and The Battle of Sekigahara—alongside intervening cinematics. The campaign is set around 1598–1600 and follows General Kichiro during Tokugawa Ieyasu's struggle to unify Japan. In the opening, Kichiro and Torii Mototada attack Osaka to secure the young heir of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. They later campaign against forces supporting Uesugi Kagekatsu, then struggle to hold the road and Mototada's estate as Ishida Mitsunari's threat grows. The scenario list alternates large battles with narrative sequences, so the plot's turning points occur between missions as well as during their objectives.
Kichiro, Mototada, and divided loyalty
Kichiro's relationship with Mototada anchors the story. Mototada serves Tokugawa with unwavering loyalty, while Kichiro discovers that Tokugawa was responsible for destroying his family when he was an infant. The revelation challenges the young general's sense of duty, but he continues to follow his master through the defense at Fushimi. Mototada confirms the truth and remains behind as the enemy breaks through the castle defenses, sacrificing himself so noncombatants can escape. At Sekigahara, Kichiro fights beside Tokugawa and sees the campaign end in victory. Rather than remain loyal after learning the truth, he rides away from the battlefield, accepting disgrace rather than serving the man who murdered his parents. This fictionalized conclusion connects the final battle's military outcome to Kichiro's personal decision.
Historical setting and edition notes
The campaign dramatizes the political struggle that led to the Tokugawa shogunate and the Battle of Sekigahara. Kichiro is a fictional protagonist, and the story reshapes events for the series' narrative. The campaign was available from the beginning in The Asian Dynasties; in the original expansion progression, completing Japan unlocked the China campaign, which in turn unlocked India. The Complete Edition and Definitive Edition make the campaigns available without that original unlock chain. Use the individual scenario pages for each mission's objective list and map-specific tactics, since the campaign page summarizes the complete story rather than a single build order.
