Scenario setting & objectives

Destroy the Osaka Town Center to complete the required objective. Optional goals reward destroying the Ronin Camp, freeing woodcutters, building three Shrines, advancing through a Wonder, constructing a Castle in the western village and removing Outposts that guard the farmers. These side tasks can strengthen the army and economy before the final assault.

Mission approach

Secure workers and nearby resources before investing in every optional construction goal. Shrines can build the economy while a force clears the route, but keep enough units together to attack the Town Center. Free woodcutters and remove nearby Outposts when the detour improves safe access to the west.

Historical setting and campaign role

The Siege of Osaka opens Act I: Japan in The Asian Dynasties. The scenario is set in 1600, after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's death left the country divided among competing Daimyo. The story follows General Kichiro and his mentor Torii Mototada as they serve Tokugawa Ieyasu and attempt to take Osaka Castle, where Hideyoshi's young heir Toyotomi Hideyori is protected. The campaign frames the operation as Tokugawa's first step toward unifying Japan. The scenario's opening cinematics introduce the march and the castle, while the mission moves quickly from exploration into a multi-front siege. The historical Siege of Osaka took place in 1615, so the campaign advances the event to 1600 for its fictionalized narrative chronology.

Starting force, base and primary objective

The player controls the Eastern Tokugawa Army and begins with Torii Mototada, General Kichiro, Naginata Riders, Ashigaru Musketeers, Yumi Archers and Yabusame. The nearby settlement has a Town Center, an Orchard Rickshaw and a small group of Villagers gathering resources. The main objective is direct: destroy the Osaka Town Center for the 400 XP reward. At the beginning, the starting army is large enough to explore and collect nearby treasures without immediately facing a major attack. Because the economy starts with few Villagers, early Home City shipments are valuable as military reinforcement. Preserve the initial force instead of trading it away against every guard; several optional objectives unlock allies and resources that make the final assault easier.

Allied villages and optional objectives

The map rewards clearing threats and helping settlements before attacking the castle. Destroying the Ronin Camp earns 400 XP and activates the Northern Village, whose Villagers can then build an army. Constructing a Castle in the Western Village earns another 400 XP and turns that settlement into a military ally. Freeing Osaka's captive woodcutters is worth 500 XP; destroy the Stockades holding the Wokou Horsemen and the imprisoned Yojimbo join the player's side. In the south, Osaka Farmers work Rice Paddies. Destroy the Outposts watching them for 500 XP, and the farmers become military units that can help with the siege. Building three Shrines and building a Wonder to advance the army each award 400 XP. These secondary tasks convert map control into extra troops and age progression, rather than serving as distractions from the Town Center objective.

Approach to the Ronin Camp

The Northern Village points the player toward the Ronin Camp in the northeast. The camp is fortified with an Outpost and Barracks, and it can field Ronin, Samurai, Shinobi, Wokou Horsemen, Wokou and Yumi Archers. Its first defenders include powerful melee units in front and ranged troops behind, so charging only with Naginata Riders can cost valuable Cavalry. Let Ashigaru Musketeers and Yumi Archers focus the exposed ranged line while the mounted units engage the front. Once the camp's defenses begin to fall, expect another wave; the Outpost and Barracks must be destroyed and the remaining troops cleared before the Northern Village becomes active. This is a meaningful early fight, so bring reinforcements and recover losses before marching toward Osaka.

Crossing the river and opening a second front

A river separates the player's base and allied villages from Osaka Castle, and the central fortress is protected by walls, gates, Outposts and a Castle. The Western Village offers a route against the western defenses once the player builds the required Castle there. Meanwhile, the northern force can destroy the Stockades and release the woodcutters. This division creates pressure from more than one direction and makes it harder for the Osaka Garrison to concentrate on a single entrance. The farmers in the south provide another force after their guard Outposts are destroyed. Keep an army near each opening long enough to protect the allies as they mobilize, then regroup for the final push if one force is too weak to break the walls alone.

Economy, age advancement and siege equipment

The map contains abundant wood but comparatively few animals, so Rice Paddies are important for sustained Food gathering and later Coin once the mines are exhausted. The scenario lets the player build a Wonder to age up, and the Castle objective unlocks the Western Village as an ally. A Dutch Consulate choice can provide Culverins, Falconets, strong Cavalry and a Bank Wagon shipment, which can help replenish Coin after mining runs short; this is one possible campaign approach rather than a mission requirement. Osaka's walls and Castle need dedicated siege damage. Falconets, Morutaru and other Artillery are useful for breaching them, while Infantry and Cavalry protect those guns from the enemy's defenders. Avoid sending artillery through narrow entrances without a screen, since losing it slows the entire assault.

Treasures and end of mission

Ten treasures are distributed between the player's base, the Northern and Western Villages, the Ronin route and the Osaka Garrison. Their guardians and rewards vary, so clear them with a suitable group and avoid pulling guards into the fortress approaches. Treasures can help offset the starting economy's small size while the player completes the secondary tasks. Once allied forces have mobilized and the army has enough Artillery, combine the groups and breach Osaka's outer defenses. The Garrison also controls settlements inside the walls; clear those defenders and structures as the force advances. Destroying the Town Center completes the scenario. The mission's optional objectives are valuable because they build a larger coalition, but the player should keep the main target in view and not spend all reinforcements on optional fights.

A measured route through the objectives

The scenario's optional rewards naturally form a progression: collect safe treasures and preserve the starting troops, clear the northeastern Ronin Camp to gain the Northern Village, then secure the Western Village and free the woodcutters while the economy grows. Destroying the southern Outposts converts the Osaka Farmers into another allied force. These allies make it practical to pressure multiple entrances before the final Town Center assault. The player can build Shrines and a Wonder along the way, but should keep enough troops to protect workers and siege equipment. Since the castle defenses and walls are strong, a direct early attack can waste the army that is needed to finish the mission.

Use the Osaka rebellion to assemble the attack

The opening Act I: Japan scenario follows the unrest after Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s death and introduces Sakuma Kichiro and Daimyo Torii Mototada. Destroying Osaka’s Town Center is the primary objective; optional tasks can build a stronger force before the siege. Free captive woodcutters, clear the Ronin Camp, build three Shrines, construct a Wonder to advance an Age, build a Castle in the western village and remove Outposts guarding farmers. Choose the optional tasks that support the Town Center assault: rescued workers and Shrines can strengthen the economy, while the Wonder and Castle require time and protection. Clear the outposts before moving farmers, and use the freed units as support rather than letting them travel alone. The mission opens with the uprising after Hideyoshi’s death, so use the allied resistance to create a route into Osaka instead of attempting an unsupported direct attack.
