Function
Villages provide more population than ordinary Houses and can fatten or train livestock. Chinese cards and building technologies add further functions, including shipment-related effects; in the Definitive Edition, their statistics and improvements differ from the original expansion.
Placement & timing
Place Villages to provide housing and livestock access while keeping the Chinese economy’s build-space needs in mind. Compare the cost of extra Village upgrades with the army population the next phase requires.
Chinese housing, livestock and version values
The Chinese Village combines housing with livestock and shipment functions. In the Asian Dynasties version, a Village costs 200 Wood, has 2,500 hit points and 32 line of sight, takes 20 seconds to build, and grants 20 population. The Definitive Edition reduced the cost to 180 Wood and construction time to 18 seconds; its current recorded profile lists 2,000 hit points and 20 line of sight, while a later Knights of the Mediterranean update note gives 24 line of sight. Check the release profile when comparing exact values. Up to six Villages may be built, each with an 18-second build time and up to eight builders in the current profile. Herdable animals tasked into a Village fatten faster. The building can train Goats, and Water Buffaloes become available with the Water Buffalo Ranching card; it also receives Home City shipments. It can garrison up to 20 eligible units, including Villagers and Homestead Wagons, and has a ranged attack useful against raiding units, with listed bonuses against Villagers, Cavalry and Shock troops. Treat it as a multi-purpose economic anchor: place it where livestock can be brought safely and where its population support will remain useful, but remember that its 180-Wood cost competes with early production buildings and economic expansion.
Housing, livestock and shipment functions
A Chinese Village costs 180 Wood, takes 18 seconds to build and supports 20 population; the civilization can place up to six. Villages also train Goats, and the Water Buffalo Ranching card adds Water Buffalo access. Assigning herdable animals to the building speeds their fattening, so placing Villages near the livestock area can make the structure part of the Food plan as well as housing. It receives Home City shipments and can garrison up to 20 Villagers, Homestead Wagons, healing units or the Regent. Its defensive ranged and anti-ship attacks require the Village Defense card and a garrison, so an unupgraded empty Village should not be expected to defend itself. The structure’s multiple roles compete for placement: protect the population support and livestock, but do not cluster every Village where one siege push can interrupt the economy. A Village Rickshaw can build it, giving the Chinese player a dedicated mobile construction option.
