Effect & research conditions

The research costs 2,000 Food and takes 15 seconds. It reduces Ordinance Rifleman and Pikeman training time by 30%, grants their Veteran and Royal Guard upgrades if they do not already have them, converts existing Crossbowmen into Ordinance Riflemen, and makes Ordinance Riflemen replace Crossbowmen in production at Barracks, Forts and Galleons.

Research condition

Portuguese; Industrial Age; Church; requires the Treaty of Tordesillas Home City Card to have been sent. Cost: 2,000 Food; research time: 15 seconds.

When to research

Research when the Portuguese army can use the faster production and upgraded infantry, and account for the conversion before relying on Crossbowmen for a different role. The large Food cost competes with an army and other Industrial Age spending, so begin the research before the force needs to arrive and reserve population for the converted or newly trained units.

The Crossbowman line changes immediately

Ordenança converts existing Crossbowmen into Ordinance Riflemen and changes later production so Ordinance Riflemen replace Crossbowmen at Barracks, Forts and Galleons. This means the research affects units already on the field as well as the future roster. Plan the conversion before paying the cost if the current Crossbowmen are needed for a specific role, and make sure the army has room for the changed population and composition.

A combined upgrade and production timing

The technology reduces Ordinance Rifleman and Pikeman training time by 30% and grants their Veteran and Royal Guard upgrades if missing. The effects can support sustained production, but they require the Portuguese Industrial Age and Treaty of Tordesillas card condition. Research at the Church before a planned reinforcement window, then use the faster queue and existing-unit upgrades together rather than treating Ordenança as a one-time Crossbowman shipment.
