Sonora

Sonora is an original Age of Empires III map whose Native settlement roster can differ between the original game and later releases. Because those settlements determine which alliances, units and improvements are available, the map’s value is not defined by terrain alone. Resource and objective positions are generated for each match, so an old build order may not fit the current version or seed.

Map character

During the opening scout, locate the Native settlements and read their names before choosing a Trading Post target or Home City deck. Then map Hunts, Coin and Wood around the route to those sites. If an older guide assumes a particular tribe, compare that roster with the match actually loaded rather than spending time or army strength on an unavailable alliance.

What to scout

Sonora rewards preparation that accounts for both version and layout. Use the settlements present in the active release to choose Native units, and keep enough force near any post that is far from the Town Center. Adapt the opening if the desired ally or resource placement is missing.

Trade Route, scarce resources and chokepoints

Sonora has a winding Trade Route with five Trading Post sites, while cliffs and canyons create narrow approaches. Players begin near Berry Bushes, but other resources can be scarce; Silver Mines, Pronghorn and Bison are important sources farther from the starting area. The open center may contain richer ore deposits, while Native settlements sit toward the map edges. Scout the route and nearby passes early, then secure a defensible Trading Post without stranding gatherers away from the main army.
