Unknown - LOST

Unknown - LOST is a special-map variant that combines the unpredictable Unknown map setting with a nomadic, treasure-led opening. It belongs to the Definitive Edition Special Maps set. Players do not begin with the ordinary completed settlement economy; they must explore and secure enough resources to establish their first base. Because the underlying Unknown setting can vary, the exact terrain and opportunities are not fixed between matches.

Map variant & availability

The LOST rules make the first Town Center a strategic objective rather than a starting building. Starting units and map resources support an exploration phase, while treasures and their guardians can provide the materials needed for construction. The Unknown setting can generate different terrain, resource placements, water and Native or Trade Route elements, so the available routes to a base and later income depend on the particular generation. This map is distinct from Unknown - Survival, which begins with settlement infrastructure but removes natural resources.

Generated start

Scout the terrain and treasure locations before deciding how to divide the starting force. Protect the Hero or other unit needed to clear guardians, gather enough resources for the first Town Center, and avoid fighting over distant rewards while construction remains unsecured. Adapt the follow-up plan to the generated map: water, Native settlements and Trading Posts matter only when they actually appear. Treat this as a special multiplayer opening and check the lobby’s map variant before loading a standard Unknown build order.

The first base is the central objective

LOST changes the normal settlement opening by making the first Town Center a goal to establish rather than an assumed starting building. The starting force must explore, defeat or avoid treasure guardians and gather enough resources to begin construction. Keep the units needed for the Town Center close to the builder until the foundation is secure; losing the builder or spending the required resources elsewhere can delay the whole economy. Treasure rewards can finance the first base, but their locations and guardians vary with the Unknown generation. A safe nearby treasure is often more valuable than a distant high reward if securing it leaves the first settlement exposed.

From nomadic opening to normal map control

After the first Town Center is placed, transition from exploration to the standard Age III economy: protect the settlement, establish the production buildings the civilization needs and secure the generated resources or neutral sites. Water, Trade Routes, Native settlements and terrain vary, so do not assume each of those opportunities exists. A player who spends too long roaming for treasure may fall behind once an opponent has a functioning base; one who settles too early without enough resource support may be unable to train workers or defend the new position. Use the initial units to create a safe perimeter, then scout again from the settlement and build toward the opportunities the map actually generated.

Generation size and variable neutral content

The LOST map is listed at a 296 by 296 generation size, approximately 68,813 square map units. Settlements and Outlaws are variable, and Fish and Whales are also listed as variable, so players should not expect the same neutral alliances, outlaw roster or water economy each match. The nominal size leaves enough area for exploration, but the nomadic opening still makes time and safe treasure access more important than claiming distant territory. Use the Explorer to reveal a local route, identify whether water is relevant and plan the first Town Center around what the current generation actually offers. If a settlement or naval opportunity is absent, redirect resources to securing the first base instead of following a fixed map plan.
