Unknown - Survival

Unknown - Survival is a special map variant in the Definitive Edition Special Maps set. It combines a resource-starved Survival opening with the Unknown map family. Players start with a settlement and workers but lack the normal natural-resource economy, so their Home City deck and starting conditions determine whether the colony can grow. Unlike Eurasian Steppe - Survival, this variant has no Trade Route Trading Posts.

Map variant & availability

There are no ordinary hunts, trees or mines to build a standard gathering economy around. Players must use the resources and infrastructure supplied at the start, then turn shipments and civilization-specific economic tools into repeatable income. The absence of Trade Posts changes which cards and map-control plans can help: a Trading Post investment cannot provide the route-based stream available on Eurasian Steppe - Survival. Special starting rules also mean that a civilization’s normal opening units or crates may not be a reliable assumption.

Economic rules

Review the map variant and civilization before choosing a deck. Prioritize cards and abilities that provide resources, workers or economic buildings that can produce without natural deposits; ordinary upgrades to hunting, logging or mining cannot solve the opening by themselves. Protect the first income source and send shipments with enough value to establish the next one. Check the initial units and resources in the lobby rather than importing the Eurasian Steppe - Survival plan, whose Trade Posts create a different route to recovery.

Build an economy without natural deposits

The first decision on Unknown - Survival is which starting asset can replace ordinary gathering. Since hunts, trees, mines and Trade Route Trading Posts are absent, a standard gathering upgrade or a plan built around Stagecoach income cannot solve the opening. Identify any starting resources, wagons, special builders or civilization abilities that can create recurring income, and protect that source while it begins producing. Home City cards that deliver workers, resource crates or economic buildings may be more valuable than a combat shipment at first, but the player still needs enough force to defend the initial settlement. The random Unknown setting can change travel lanes and terrain around the start, so scout routes before moving a small army away from its first income.

How it differs from Eurasian Steppe - Survival

Unknown - Survival and Eurasian Steppe - Survival share a scarce-resource premise, but they do not have the same map economy. Eurasian Steppe - Survival includes Trade Posts that can provide a route to income; Unknown - Survival does not. A deck built around claiming or upgrading those Trade Posts therefore loses its main purpose here. Unknown’s generated landscape also varies, so the player cannot assume fixed crossings or resource positions. Choose an opening that remains functional without route income, then adapt to the actual generated map. The distinction matters in team games as well: allies should not plan their shipments around a Trading Post that the chosen variant does not provide.

Starting assets and neutral support

The map starts each player with a Town Center, a small number of Villagers and a Home City shipment, so the first shipment arrives as part of the opening economy. The map reference lists no Native settlements, Outlaws or treasures for this variant. Do not plan an early alliance, outlaw purchase or treasure clear; use the starting shipment and any civilization-specific income to keep the Town Center economy alive. The lack of neutral income makes the first protected resource source and the choice of shipment more important than early map expansion. Keep the initial force together until the settlement can replace losses, then scout outward for safe positions rather than expecting a nearby neutral site to rescue a stalled economy.
