War Hut

The War Hut is a defensive infantry-production building used by the Aztecs, Haudenosaunee, Lakota and Inca in Age of Empires III. Its queue follows the selected civilization’s roster, so it acts as a forward production point for different unit mixes rather than a universal barracks. The Maya also use War Huts in campaign scenarios; that scripted access is separate from the standard skirmish civilization list.

Function

The standard building is available in the Exploration Age and costs 250 Wood. It takes 50 seconds to build, has 2,000 hit points, occupies a 4×4 footprint, and has 34 Line of Sight in the listed profile. Up to four builders can work on it, the standard build limit is seven, and it can garrison up to 20 eligible units. It trains and upgrades infantry, receives Home City shipments and attacks nearby enemies. The War Hut Travois and selected civilization units or cards provide additional construction routes.

Placement & timing

Place a War Hut where its infantry can reinforce the front and its defensive presence protects a useful route or gathering area. Select the roster for the civilization and matchup: Coyote Runners, Tomahawks, Cetan Bowmen, Aennas and Inca infantry fill different roles. A forward Hut shortens reinforcement travel but is vulnerable to siege, so build it behind a screen and keep enough units nearby to protect it.

Practical direction

Treat the War Hut as both production and a position to defend. Its roster, cards and defensive traits change by civilization and release; the stat table gives the shared building profile, while the sections below explain those differences.

The infantry queue depends on the civilization

The Aztecs, Haudenosaunee, Lakota and Inca do not share one infantry roster. The War Hut can provide units such as the Aztec Coyote Runner, Haudenosaunee Tomahawk or Aenna, and Lakota Cetan Bow or Wakina Rifle; Inca access includes its own infantry. Compare the available unit’s attack type, movement and counter role before queuing a large batch. The Aztecs also have the Nobles’ Hut as a separate unique building, so do not treat every Native American production option as the same structure. In campaign missions, the Maya may use War Huts under scenario-specific rules.

Forward production has a defensive trade-off

A Hut built near a contested route can send replacements into a fight quickly and garrison eligible units, but moving Villagers to a forward foundation creates a vulnerable construction window. The standard build limit is seven; civilization cards can raise it or change hit points, costs or train times. The Advanced War Huts card, for example, raises the Haudenosaunee build limit and building durability while reducing train time for selected units. Lakota cards can allow particular units to build Huts or move buildings. Check the active card and civilization before assuming those options are available.

Definitive Edition changed some combat interactions

The original WarChiefs version could not reveal stealth units and had a 1.5× ranged multiplier against Shock Infantry. Definitive Edition gives the War Hut the ability to reveal stealth; update 13088 set its ranged multiplier against Shock Infantry to 1.3×. These are version-specific combat rules. The building is useful for vision and support, but it is not a substitute for a field army, and siege units can still remove an exposed Hut.
