Archaic infantry

Archaic infantry is a support tag used for certain bow- and hand-weapon troops in Age of Empires III. It is not a synonym for every unit that looks old-fashioned, nor is it a standalone training role. The tag includes Pikemen and Foot Archers, with individual exceptions determined by the game’s unit data; for example, Rodeleros are not tagged as Archaic Infantry while War Dogs are.

Tag meaning & limits

The tag matters when a Home City card or upgrade specifically affects Archaic Infantry. It also groups units such as Crossbowmen, Longbowmen, Yumi Archers and the game’s Pikeman variants. The roster does not map one-to-one to a civilization or building: different civilizations field their own archaic units, and a unit can carry other combat tags at the same time. Spanish cards provide notable interactions: TEAM Hidalgos improves the training of the team’s archaic units, while Reconquista can send a Conquistador for every five Archaic Infantry units lost.

Units and card interactions

Use the tag when evaluating a specific card, aura or unit tooltip, not as a shortcut for choosing a general counter. Verify that the unit actually has the tag—Rodelero is a useful exception—and include the card’s trigger or team-wide effect in the calculation. Spanish players can value archaic losses differently when Reconquista is in the deck, but should not deliberately sacrifice units unless the shipment reward serves a clear timing or army plan.

What the Archaic Infantry tag includes

In Age of Empires III, Archaic Infantry is a game tag introduced in update 13.4412. It groups certain Pikemen and Foot Archers, not every unit that appears historical or fights with a hand weapon. Pikeman variants such as Berber Spearmen, Javanese Spearmen, Papal Guards, Plumed Spearmen, Qiang Pikemen, Sohei Naginata and Swiss Pikemen belong to the tag. Foot Archers include Crossbowmen, Longbowmen, Yumi Archers, Carib Blowgunners, Aenna, Chu Ko Nu, Fulani Archers and several Native units. A unit may carry other classifications at the same time, so the tag should be read as one part of its game data rather than its whole combat role.

Exceptions and why the tag matters

The tag is useful only when an effect explicitly checks for Archaic Infantry. Rodeleros are a notable exception: despite their old-fashioned appearance and hand attack, they are not tagged as Archaic Infantry. War Dogs are tagged even though they are not a Pikeman or Foot Archer. Most other hand Infantry that is not a Pikeman also falls outside the category. This means players should not infer the tag from a unit’s weapon, armor or historical period. Read the card or unit information to see whether the effect applies, especially when counting losses or calculating training time.

Spanish Home City interactions

Spain has two notable interactions with the class. TEAM Hidalgos improves training speed for Archaic Infantry across the team, which can help allied players who use Pikemen or Foot Archers. Reconquista sends one Conquistador for every five Archaic Infantry units lost. These effects make the tag relevant to both production and shipment value, but they do not change the units’ basic counters or make a loss automatically worthwhile. A player can use the faster training bonus to reinforce the roster and can account for Reconquista when planning a prolonged fight. Do not deliberately sacrifice units only to reach a shipment threshold if the army cannot survive the exchange.

Upgrades and civilization exceptions

Archaic units do not share one universal upgrade path. In the original game before the expansions, European Pikemen, Crossbowmen and Longbowmen generally stopped at Veteran unless a civilization-specific technology or Home City card extended them. Examples include the Spanish Royal Guard Pikeman, Portuguese Besteiros Church technology for Crossbowmen and the British Yeomen card for Longbowmen. Definitive Edition added options such as The Papal Guard politician, which can provide Guard and Imperial upgrades or discounts for eligible Pikemen and Crossbowmen. Portuguese Crossbowmen also have their Royal Guard path, while Swedish Crossbowmen remain an exception that cannot upgrade beyond Veteran. Check the civilization and version before assuming that an archaic unit is permanently capped.

Using the category in a roster

Archaic Infantry includes both anti-cavalry Pikemen and ranged Foot Archers, so it does not identify one tactical role. Pikemen can protect artillery or threaten cavalry, while Crossbowmen and Longbowmen offer ranged damage at different costs and ranges. Cards affecting the shared tag can benefit several distinct unit types, which makes them valuable when the deck uses more than one archaic line. They still need support against their normal counters: a tag-based training or upgrade bonus does not make the unit immune to cavalry, artillery or Heavy Infantry. Build the composition around the specific unit and the opponent, then use the Archaic Infantry label to identify which shared card effects apply.
