E3 2005

E3 2005 records four Age of Empires III beta demonstrations presented by Bruce Shelley at E3 and shown again at Gamescom, about a month before release. Each showcase highlighted a different feature: artillery and physics, combat formations, the Home City shipment interface, and a large battlefield.

Prototype context

The demonstrations used different factions and starting forces rather than a shared campaign story. They show early examples of naval support, artillery, grouped infantry and cavalry, Home City shipments, and fixed defenses. Their value today is historical: they document how the developers introduced Age of Empires III systems to an audience before launch.

What it represents

Consult this entry when identifying the game’s pre-release footage or tracing how its systems were presented. The scenarios are beta showcases, not retail missions or a guide to current Definitive Edition balance. In particular, the combat formation display included formations removed from the final game and represented through Unit stance instead.

Four demonstrations, four different showcases

The first demonstration focused on artillery and the Havok physics engine: the French force had two Fishing Boats, two Heavy Cannons and an Outpost on Saguenay, facing a German colony whose buildings and army served as a visual opponent. The second showed combat and formations. One Russian sample placed ten Musketeers against eight enemy Musketeers; another used two battalions of twenty Musketeers with ten Hussars behind them, facing two Heavy Cannons. The third demonstration used a German settlement with Settlers and economic and military buildings while Shelley introduced the Home City tab and shipment system. The final, large land battle used a Spanish force with a Caravel, three Fishing Boats, a fortified base centered on a Command Post, a Fixed Gun at the peninsula tip, and battalions of Musketeers and Dragoons. Its British opponent had an Outpost, Musketeers and Rockets.

What the beta record can and cannot tell players

These scenes were designed to showcase features, not to model balanced retail matches. The German settlement in the first scene served demonstration purposes, and the listed forces are snapshot starting compositions rather than recommended build orders. The formation example is especially version-specific: those formations did not remain as shown in the final game and were represented through the Unit stance system. Use the regular unit, building and technology entries for final-release values; this page preserves the pre-release context and does not treat beta behavior as a Definitive Edition rule.
