Effect & research conditions

Research takes 10 seconds and costs 125 Wood and 125 Coin. The primary effect makes Villagers considerably harder to kill; the additional 15% applies to units that qualify for Villager upgrades, rather than to every unit in the army. The technology can stack with Great Coat, Spirit Medicine or Eastern Medicine and Home City Cards that increase Villager hit points. Its exact value therefore depends on the civilization and the other upgrades already researched.

Research condition

Available from the Exploration Age. Research it at Trading Post or Tambo on a Nootka settlement.

When to research

Consider it when protecting Villagers is important or when the civilization fields units that benefit from Villager upgrades. It is particularly relevant to civilizations whose Villager-type units already have elevated hit points, since a percentage increase scales with their existing health. Research before a raid or push if the extra survivability can change how long workers or eligible units remain in combat.

The effect can stack with other health upgrades

Nootka Bark Clothing stacks with Great Coat, Spirit Medicine or Eastern Medicine, and Home City Cards that increase Villager hit points. This lets the effect fit into different civilization plans, but its benefit applies to the relevant Villager and Villager-upgraded units. Identify which units qualify before assuming the 15% bonus covers the full army.

Protect workers without changing their job

A 50% hit-point increase can give Villagers more time to retreat from a raid, but they remain economic units rather than dedicated soldiers. Use the added durability to improve survival during pressure, not as a reason to leave a worker line undefended. A short research time and modest resource cost make timing flexible, but a safe Town Center and a retreat route still matter.
