Portuguese strategy

The Portuguese receive a Covered Wagon each time they advance an Age, giving them a recurring way to expand Town Center presence. Their Explorer can use Spyglass to reveal a distant location, while their roster supports flexible defense and ranged cavalry.

Civilization identity & tools

A new Town Center can expand Settler production and secure a region, but it also requires protection. Portuguese Musketeers and Dragoons are prominent Royal Guard units; Cassadors serve as ranged infantry, and Organ Guns provide concentrated artillery fire. The Explorer's scouting ability can help inspect a route before moving the army.

Matchups & timing

Place each additional Town Center where resources or a strategic route justify the investment. Use Dragoons when enemy cavalry is a concern, and bring infantry or artillery support for targets their ranged cavalry cannot efficiently handle.

Practical plan

Use the Explorer and map scouting to choose safe expansion sites, then keep the Town Centers defended. Spread the economy only as quickly as the army can protect it.

Scouting-led expansion

Portuguese strategy benefits from using the civilization’s map vision and flexible expansion tools to identify where the next Town Center or defensive position should go. Scout with the Explorer before committing to a forward site, then use the civilization’s age-up and Town Center options to establish control over a resource area. An extra Town Center can improve worker production and protect a wider economy, but it also spreads the army and creates another structure that needs defense. Choose a location with safe Food and Coin, and keep a route for reinforcements. Portuguese units and shipments can vary with the selected deck and release, so match the opening to the actual Home City cards rather than a generic build order. On hybrid maps, account for shoreline access and use naval routes only when the water can be defended. The strategy should connect scouting, economy and defense: reveal the opponent’s approach, build where the economy can sustain production, then use the Portuguese army to hold the space gained. If the match is under early pressure, prioritize surviving workers and a stable base before adding distant expansions. Use the linked Portuguese, Town Center, Explorer and build-order pages for specific unit costs and shipment timings.

Town Center and worker safety

Use additional Town Center coverage to keep Villager production active and shelter workers when the opponent raids. Avoid placing expansion Town Centers so far apart that one army cannot defend them; connect each expansion to a resource plan and a safe reinforcement route.

Home City support

Select shipments that match the timing of the next Town Center, army or defense. Portuguese flexibility is strongest when the deck and map plan work together; avoid sending cards that do not support the current phase.

Responding to early pressure

The additional Town Center option can shelter Villagers, but it takes resources and construction time. If pressured, defend the workers and stabilize production before placing another expansion far from support.

Expansion tradeoff

Each extra Town Center improves worker production but asks the army to defend a larger area. Expand toward resources that repay the investment and keep the settlement connected to the main force.

Secure the extra Town Center before expanding again

Portugal receives a Town Center with each age advancement, so choose the age-up location as part of the strategy. Place the new settlement near huntables, mines or a Trade Route that can be defended; avoid stretching Villagers beyond support just to claim distant ground. Keep the original Town Center producing and use the second queue to grow the worker count, then add Houses and production buildings before population becomes a bottleneck. If the opponent is applying early pressure, delay a greedy age-up or choose a safer location and build a military screen first. The extra Town Center is valuable only when it survives long enough to produce Villagers and protect a useful resource area.

Transition from economic growth to a balanced army

Portugal’s economy can support a long game, but the new Town Center does not answer enemy units by itself. Use scouting to choose between Cassadors for ranged infantry pressure, Dragoons to contest cavalry and artillery such as Organ Guns to break formations or buildings. Keep a durable screen near the guns and protect Cassadors from cavalry. Trading Posts and Native settlements add value when their route or alliance can be held; do not let them delay the production needed to defend new territory. Time the next age when its units or upgrades solve a real problem, and retain enough resources to keep both Town Centers and military production active afterward.
