Stealth mode
Stealth mode lets certain Age of Empires III units hide from ordinary enemy line of sight. It is a unit-specific ability, not a universal stance, and some heroes and buildings can reveal hidden units.

Detection & limits
A unit generally cannot activate stealth while enemy units or buildings see it. While hidden, it moves more slowly and does not automatically engage; an attack order reveals it. Heroes, Town Centers, Forts, Outposts, and some War Huts can detect stealth within their sight, and researching Spies reveals enemy stealth units to the player.
Scouting & ambush
Use stealth to scout or approach a target outside detection range, then plan an escape route before attacking. Check the unit’s page for its activation limits and speed penalty, and avoid sending it through likely detection zones.
Activation, detection and scouting tradeoffs
Stealth is available only to specific units and is an ability rather than a universal toggle for every army. A unit cannot enter Stealth while it is within an enemy unit or building’s detection range. Once hidden, it moves more slowly and does not automatically engage; issuing an attack order reveals it. Certain Heroes and buildings, including Town Centers, Forts, Outposts and War Huts, can detect hidden units, while the Spies technology lets the player see enemy Stealth units even when they are concealed. Some units have Stealth without detection, and some cards or technologies are required before a unit can activate it. Use it to scout routes, reposition or approach a target outside detection, but check the enemy’s coverage before committing. Stealth does not make a unit invulnerable, and detection range can make a seemingly safe path visible. Reveal the unit deliberately when the attack is ready rather than allowing an automatic engagement to interrupt the approach.
Units and buildings with Stealth
Stealth-capable units in Age III include Spies, Navajo Riflemen, Ninja, Eagle Scouts, Native Scouts, Sohei Archers with Intonjutsu Stealth, Coyote Runners with the relevant card, and other civilization-specific units. The Lakota War Chief’s Heyoka card can preserve his normal speed while hidden. Some Inca War Huts and Strongholds can gain Stealth through Cloud Fortresses. These access rules vary by unit; check the unit or card page rather than assuming every listed unit starts with the ability.
Detection and counterplay
Stealth does not protect a unit from every source of vision. Enemy Heroes and structures with anti-Stealth vision can reveal it, and Spies exposes enemy Stealth units after its research. Scout likely approaches before hiding, since a unit cannot activate the ability while already inside detection range. The player can still move a hidden unit into a dangerous area; concealment is a vision mechanic, not damage resistance.
