Matchup & timing
Use Alain Magnan’s 7.5 speed to move between the base defense in Breakout and the cache-clearing objective in Into the Caves. His 1,100 hit points support repeated combat, but the scenario still rewards recovery instead of leaving him surrounded. Keep the Knights of St. John forces close enough to protect him after a collapse.
Campaign biography and two combat profiles
Alain first appears as the commander of the Knights of St. John during the Siege of Malta. A signal fire prompts his cavalry march to rescue Morgan Black and the fort; after the Ottomans are driven from Malta, Alain gives Morgan his flagship and sends him to the New World. The two later pursue information about the Fountain of Youth, but Alain is secretly the acting commander of the Circle of Ossus. He dies during the battle at the Fountain, although the Circle survives. In Breakout and Into the Caves, the controllable hero has 1,100 hit points, 40% ranged resistance and Regeneration. At zero health he collapses; after regenerating at least 100 hit points, a friendly unit or building can revive him. He deals 45 hand damage and 30 trample damage. The final-mission enemy version is a separate profile with 3,500 hit points, 75% ranged resistance and doubled attack damage, but cannot regenerate and dies normally. Do not use the enemy stats when planning around the hero version. As a hero, Alain also cannot collect Treasure or build Trading Posts and Town Centers like an Explorer.
Mission appearances and recovery
Alain is playable in Breakout and Into the Caves, appears only in a cutscene in Spanish Treasure Fleet, and returns as an enemy in The Fountain of Youth?. His hero profile’s collapse rule makes retreat management important: at zero hit points he remains recoverable, but allies must stay close until he regenerates to 100 health. He is not an Explorer and cannot collect Treasure or build Trading Posts or Town Centers. The much stronger 3,500-hit-point version belongs only to the final mission encounter and should not be confused with the controllable 1,100-hit-point hero.
