Effect & research conditions

Research at a Rice Paddy after Irrigation Channels. It costs 150 Wood and 150 Coin and takes 30 seconds. The effect targets the same named Food sources as Irrigation Channels; it does not increase Coin gathering. Mechanized Rice Cultivation is the follow-up technology in the Imperial Age. The return comes from continued gathering after both the earlier chain and this research have been paid for.

Research condition

Asian civilizations; Fortress Age; Rice Paddy; requires Irrigation Channels

When to research

Research when an established farming economy can keep workers on the affected sources and has enough resources to continue toward the Imperial Age upgrade. If the army needs a defensive response, delay the 30-second queue until the economy can spare it. A short remaining match or shift away from farming reduces the time available to earn back the cost.

Continue the Food chain in sequence

Paddy Threshing leads to Irrigation Channels, then Dike-Controlled Canals, and finally Mechanized Rice Cultivation. Each stage adds its own specified gathering effect and has to be researched before the next. This chain uses the Rice Paddy and should not be confused with the separate Rice Trade, Rice Markets and Rice Exports Coin upgrades.

The affected resources must be in use

The +15% applies to Villagers gathering Food from Mills, Farms, Food Rice Paddies, Fields and Haciendas, plus Hacienda automatic Food gathering. It does not boost hunting, berries or fishing under the listed effect. Assign workers to covered sources and protect them if the goal is to realize the research value.
