Role, availability & values

Production is available through Trading Post or Tambo on a House of Oldenburg palace or Native Embassy. It has 120 hit points. It moves at 4.25 speed. Training costs 110 Food; it takes 30 seconds to train. Attack profile: Hand attack deals 12.5 damage. Ranged attack deals 22.5 damage. Siege attack deals 19.5 damage. Hand attack bonuses: 2.0× against Cavalry and 1.6× against Shock troops. Ranged attack bonuses: 1.25× against Heavy cavalry and 1.15× against Hand shock trooper. Special ability or role: Defence Promotion.

Matchup & timing

Hand attack is especially effective against Cavalry (2×), Shock troops (1.6×). Ranged attack is especially effective against Heavy cavalry (1.25×), Hand shock trooper (1.15×). Use ranged fire to focus Heavy cavalry and Hand shock trooper before they can close; hold the melee attack for Cavalry and Shock troops when they enter contact. Keep a frontline between this unit and threats that can reach it safely.

Base profile and target bonuses

The Northern Musketeer is a Fortress Age heavy infantry native warrior that costs 110 Food, trains in 30 seconds and has a limit of 16 per House of Oldenburg palace in the current profile. It has 120 hit points, 20% hand resistance, speed 4.25 and line of sight 16. Its ranged attack deals 22.5 damage at range 14 every three seconds, with a 1.25 multiplier against heavy cavalry and 1.15 against hand shock troops. Its melee attack deals 12.5 every 1.5 seconds, with multipliers of 2.0 against cavalry and 1.6 against shock troops. The siege attack deals 19.5. It is a low-durability but cost-efficient musketeer-type unit: it pays only Food and reaches farther than a standard Musketeer, but has much less health.

Defence Promotion

Northern Musketeers gain Defence Promotion after defeating enemy military units, up to three ranks. Bronze adds 25% hit points, Silver adds 35% and Gold adds 45%. The promotion improves durability rather than attack, allowing the unit to recover some of its low-health disadvantage as it survives several engagements. Cards or upgrades that affect musket infantry hit points can further support it, including Flint Lock or Second Guarantee when available. Preserve promoted units behind the main line and avoid trading them into artillery or light infantry simply because they have accumulated ranks. Their 20% hand resistance helps at close range but does not prevent ranged units from exploiting the small health pool.

Recruitment and ally variants

The native unit is trained from a Trading Post or Tambo on a House of Oldenburg palace in the Fortress Age. Germans can access Royal Embassy production after sending Prince-Electors and choosing Oldenburg; that version costs one population, has a train limit of 24 and can reach Royal Guard. The mercenary version is shipped regardless of map for Russians, Swedes and Revolutionary France, with no shared native train limit. Danes can train it at the Royal Embassy after sending Oldenburg Kings, with a higher cap and Royal Guard access. Other special routes include a Russian Royalist shipment during the Imperial Age, the Milyutin Reforms conversion of Rekruts, and the Swedish 25 Oldenburg Allies card, which can be sent again in the Imperial Age. These variants differ in population, limit, upgrades and delivery.

Combat role and counters

The unit contributes ranged pressure against heavy cavalry while retaining a melee bonus against cavalry and shock troops. This dual role lets it support a line against mounted attacks, but it should not be used as the only anti-cavalry answer when its low hit points make it easy to remove. Light infantry, counter-skirmishers and artillery are its principal counters. Keep it behind durable units, focus its ranged volley on cavalry or shock troops, and use a dedicated screen to prevent hand cavalry from reaching it. If the enemy shifts to skirmishers, avoid chasing them; the Northern Musketeer’s range of 14 is helpful, but its movement and health do not support a prolonged pursuit.

How it compares to a Musketeer

Compared with a regular Musketeer, the Northern Musketeer has less hit points and damage, arrives later in the Fortress Age and is not a standard barracks unit. Its advantages are a Food-only cost, slightly greater range and movement speed, and bonuses against heavy cavalry at range as well as cavalry in melee. That makes it a specialized ally unit rather than a general replacement. The low Coin demand can help when the economy is saving Coin for an age-up or shipment, but the 120 hit points require careful positioning. A promoted group can become more durable, although its Defence Promotion does not raise attack.

Age upgrades and version-sensitive limits

The Northern Musketeer starts at Veteran level, giving +20% hit points and damage. Royal Guard Oldenburgs costs 350 Wood and 350 Coin in the Fortress Age, requires Veteran and adds 40%. The Imperial native-warrior upgrade adds 50% hit points and damage for 1,500 Food and 1,500 Wood through the applicable civilization technology. Native-site limits have changed over time: the listed standard limit was 12 before update 13.18214 and is now 16; the German Prince-Electors route has its own limit of 30 in the described conditions. Check whether a force is native, mercenary or Embassy-trained before applying the correct cap or upgrade assumptions.

Planning an Oldenburg force

Oldenburg access is most useful when the army needs a Food-only ranged unit with cavalry bonuses and the player can keep the palace or Embassy route safe. Pair the Northern Musketeers with units that can absorb ranged fire and remove skirmishers. The native limit encourages a compact support force rather than a huge line; shipment variants can supply more, but their timing depends on the civilization’s deck. If the opponent has artillery, use mobile units to threaten it before reinforcing the Musketeers. If cavalry dominates, let the Northern unit contribute both ranged and melee bonuses while a more durable anti-cavalry unit covers its low health.

Promotion versus Veteran upgrades

Defence Promotion is earned through kills and raises hit points only; the native unit’s Veteran start and Royal Guard upgrade are separate age-based changes that can raise hit points and damage. A high-rank Northern Musketeer may therefore have better survivability even before the next technology, but it will not gain the same attack increase from the promotion itself. Mercenary, native and Embassy versions can have different upgrade access. Check the source route and the unit card before calculating final damage or durability, especially when comparing an allied shipment with locally trained Oldenburg troops.

Deployment and retreat decisions

The Northern Musketeer is most useful where the enemy must expose cavalry or shock troops to the ranged line. Its 14 range allows it to fire from behind a screen, but the low 120 hit points make sustained return fire dangerous. Avoid advancing alone to reach a target and do not use its melee multiplier as a reason to stand in a cavalry fight without support. Let the unit fire, withdraw when skirmishers or artillery take position, and use the next age or promotion investment to preserve a group that is already gaining ranks.

Shipment versus production

A card shipment is immediate reinforcement but does not prove the player can continue training the unit. The native Trading Post, German Royal Embassy and Danish Royal Embassy routes each have different limits and upgrade access; label which version an army contains.

Limits by access route

The standard native palace cap rose from 12 before update 13.18214 to 16. Germans using Prince-Electors have a separate described limit of 30 on the Royal Embassy version, while the mercenary shipment has no shared settlement cap. These values describe different sources and should not be merged into one universal limit.

Taking a favorable fight

Use the ranged bonus to pressure heavy cavalry before it reaches the line, then let a protected melee screen handle anything that closes. Their promotion ranks reward survival, so withdraw a damaged veteran rather than trading it for a small amount of siege damage.

Keep the native site safe

A House of Oldenburg palace is the source of repeatable native training. If the Trading Post or Tambo is lost, the capped force cannot be replenished there, so defend the site when the army depends on its reinforcements.

House of Oldenburg Native musketeer

The Northern Musketeer is a Fortress Age Native gunpowder Infantry unit tied to a House of Oldenburg palace. It costs 110 Food, takes 30 seconds to train and is limited to 16 per palace. Its profile has 120 hit points, 20% hand resistance, speed 4.25 and sight 16. The 22.5-damage ranged attack fires at range 14 every three seconds, with bonuses against Heavy Cavalry and Hand Shock troops. Its 12.5-damage hand attack also has a 2× bonus against Cavalry and 1.6× against Shock troops. A Trading Post or Tambo on the palace, or a Native Embassy where available, provides access; Defence Promotion is an additional ability path.

Protect the limited firing line

Northern Musketeers combine a musket range with anti-Cavalry modifiers, making them useful to defend a force from mounted attacks while contributing ranged damage. Their 120 hit points are modest for Fortress Age Infantry, so keep a stronger screen between them and enemy melee units. The 16-unit cap means the palace location controls the maximum force; losing access can interrupt replacement. Use them where the House of Oldenburg alliance offers a useful counter, not as a general substitute for ordinary Barracks troops. Since the unit is a Native palace warrior, its available technologies and promotions can differ from a standard Musketeer. Check the current alliance and card requirements before comparing upgrades or using an existing build order.
