Tennessee

Tennessee is a Fortress Age Federal State for the United States in Definitive Edition. Its age-up costs 1,200 Food and 1,000 Coin and takes 105 seconds. The reward is four Sharpshooters, and the choice adds Overmountain Settlers and Watauga Association to the U.S. Home City deck. The package combines a ranged unit shipment, worker combat and gathering bonuses, and a defensive building plan.

Age-up cost & reward

Overmountain Settlers sends four Settlers, adds 12 ranged damage to Villagers, and raises land Villager gathering from natural resources by 25%. Watauga Association sends two Outpost Wagons; Outposts gain 10 population support, and existing or newly built Outposts and Blockhouses each spawn two State Militia. This creates a link between fortification and army production: forward Outposts can add population room and generate defenders while marking territory. The four Sharpshooters arrive with the age-up itself, before either card is shipped.

Federal cards & effects

Choose Tennessee when you want to expand safely, gather from exposed natural resources, or turn Outposts into a militia network. Watauga Association requires buildings to take advantage of the free State Militia, so place Outposts where they help control routes or protect workers instead of scattering them without support. Overmountain Settlers can improve both economy and the ability of Villagers to defend themselves, which helps a booming plan. Tennessee also combines naturally with South Carolina: the first provides militia-producing fortifications, while the later state lets State Militia construct military buildings and strengthens the General’s flag bonus.

How Watauga turns defenses into a field army

Watauga Association gives two Outpost Wagons and makes Outposts and Blockhouses spawn two State Militia each, including buildings that were already standing when the card is sent. Those structures also gain ten population support. This turns defensive placement into recruitment: a protected Outpost can guard a resource route, add housing and create militia, while a forward one can extend control if the player can keep it standing. The militia’s group durability increases when several are near one another, so collect the spawned force before sending it into a fight. The United States Levy/Conscription ability can also call militia from Outposts, which gives a player another reason to keep the buildings connected to the army. Do not scatter all Outposts across the map without defenders; the card’s value depends on the structures surviving long enough to produce and support units.

Overmountain Settlers and composition support

Overmountain Settlers is an economic and defensive shipment rather than a pure worker delivery. Four Settlers arrive, land Villagers gather 25% faster from natural resources, and their ranged attack gains 12 damage. The gather bonus applies while working natural sources, so it is particularly useful before the economy has fully moved to Mills or Estates; the attack improvement can help workers resist raids and clear some treasures, but they remain vulnerable to dedicated military units. The four Sharpshooters delivered with the age-up provide an immediate long-range infantry group. They can pressure infantry and contribute while the player develops an Outpost network, but need protection from cavalry and artillery. In combination, the rewards make Tennessee a more gradual choice than a single mass shipment: the immediate Sharpshooters protect the opening, Overmountain Settlers improves the economy or worker defense, and Watauga turns investment in defensive buildings into recurring militia.

Recommended support and age-up route

Tennessee follows Commerce Age Federal States that reinforce infantry, economy or defenses. Massachusetts adds military structure options, while Delaware provides livestock and a shipment-scaled Regular card; Pennsylvania supports additional unit and building improvements. A later Industrial Age South Carolina can make State Militia build Outposts, Barracks and Stables, and increase the General’s flag bonus for them, creating a direct continuation of Watauga’s militia plan. Indiana can shorten unit training and research time, while Texas or Illinois can extend a defensive Federal State path into the Imperial Age. Shipments such as 54th Massachusetts Volunteers, Long Rifles or other State Militia deliveries benefit from an army already using the militia group mechanic. Choose the route according to whether the map calls for workers, a defensive perimeter or direct pressure: Watauga is powerful when the player has useful places to build, but does not replace a conventional frontline or siege unit.

Using the shipments across a match

Tennessee rewards a sequence in which each shipment answers a different need. Its Fortress Age transition costs 1,200 Food and 1,000 Coin, takes 105 seconds, and sends four Sharpshooters. That arrival supplies an immediate ranged screen, but the player still needs to protect it from cavalry and artillery. Overmountain Settlers can follow when the economy needs more workers: the four Settlers add labor, while the 25% gathering bonus applies to natural resources and is most useful before the economy has shifted toward Mills or Estates. Their additional ranged attack helps against light pressure, but does not turn Villagers into a frontline unit. Watauga Association gains value after Outposts or Blockhouses are already in useful positions, because the militia effect also applies to structures that existed before the card was sent. If pressure is expected, establish defensible buildings first and choose Watauga earlier; on a safe map, use the worker shipment to grow the economy before committing to a militia network. Rally the spawned militia together so their group durability and nearby support can matter, and keep the buildings connected to the army rather than scattering them without protection.
