Role, availability & values

Production is available through Trading Post or Tambo on a House of Hanover palace or Native Embassy. It has 180 hit points and 30% ranged resistance. It moves at 7.25 speed. Training costs 70 Food and 90 Coin; it takes 42 seconds to train. Attack profile: Siege attack: 20 damage at range 6; every 3.0 seconds. Hand attack: 27 damage; every 1.5 seconds. Trample attack: 18 damage; every 2.0 seconds; area of effect 3. Death Strike (charged): 54 damage; every 1.5 seconds. Special ability or role: Valor Promotion; Death Strike.

Matchup & timing

Use the unit’s 7.25-speed movement to choose the approach, threaten an exposed flank, and pull away before anti-cavalry forces can surround it. Look for isolated Villagers, ranged troops, or artillery instead of charging a formed army. Keep a clear retreat route and bring it back to the main army when the opponent protects the economy.

Base statistics and Death Strike

The Commerce Age Totenkopf Hussar costs 70 Food and 90 Coin, trains in 42 seconds and has a limit of 12 per House of Hanover palace. It has 180 hit points, 30% ranged resistance, speed 7.25 and line of sight 15. Its normal hand attack deals 27 damage every 1.5 seconds; its trample attack deals 18 in an area of three every two seconds. The special Death Strike charges while attacking and delivers a 54-damage blow after eight hits. Since update 13.18214, the Royal Scots Grey technology reduces the charge requirement to four hits. This ability activates automatically while attacking, so it is most useful in a sustained fight where the Hussar can remain engaged long enough to charge without being surrounded by anti-cavalry units.

Valor Promotion and survival

The Totenkopf Hussar gains Valor Promotion ranks by defeating enemy military units. Bronze increases hit points by 20% and reduces rate of fire by 10%; Silver increases hit points by 30% and reduces rate of fire by 20%; Gold increases hit points by 45% and reduces rate of fire by 30%. Unlike a standard attack promotion, the listed benefit focuses on durability and attack frequency, improving the Hussar’s ability to keep fighting and charge Death Strike. Preserve promoted units when possible, because new reinforcements do not inherit the ranks. Cavalry cards and upgrades can further affect hit points or damage, but they do not remove the unit’s vulnerability to heavy infantry, ranged shock troops or Ninjas.

Native access and German recruitment

The native version is recruited at a Trading Post or Tambo placed on a House of Hanover palace, with up to 12 per palace. Germans can also train it from the Royal Embassy after sending Prince-Electors and choosing Hanover. That Embassy version costs one population, has a training limit of 18 and can receive Veteran and Royal Guard upgrades, unlike the ordinary native route. The mercenary version can be shipped regardless of map and has a limit of 12. German Death Ride is another distinct option: it replaces existing Uhlans with Guard Totenkopf Hussars, gives the Guard version 60% more hit points and damage, and ships four (or five if The Logistician was chosen for Commerce Age). Guard Totenkopf Hussars are not affected by the Hanoverian Veteran or Royal Guard upgrades and use a separate limit.

Matchups and battlefield use

The Totenkopf Hussar is fast heavy hand cavalry with no listed damage multiplier against its targets. It is effective at reaching light infantry, counter-skirmishers and small groups of artillery, but heavy infantry such as Pikemen or Musketeers can stop it in melee. Light ranged cavalry, ranged shock troops and Ninjas are also unfavorable matchups. Use the speed of 7.25 to choose engagements, flank a firing line or retreat before the enemy closes. Do not leave the Hussars fighting in place against a prepared anti-cavalry screen: their value comes from mobility, trample and charging Death Strike on targets they can safely reach. A small artillery group can be a valid target if its escort is absent; an escorted battery calls for a different approach.

Age upgrades and allied shipments

Veteran Hanoverians costs 125 Wood and 125 Coin in the Commerce Age and adds 20% hit points and damage. Royal Guard Hanoverians costs 350 Wood and 350 Coin, requires Veteran, and adds 40%. The Imperial native upgrade adds 50% hit points and damage for 1,500 Food and 1,500 Wood through the applicable civilization technology. Other cards can change cavalry speed, training time, resistance or Death Strike charging. British and Maltese Hanover Allies shipments provide seven Totenkopf Hussars and can be sent again in the Imperial Age for a total of fourteen. Royal Scots Grey changes Death Strike’s charge requirement, while Native Treaties and Indian Friendship can ship the mercenary form if the relevant Hanover site is established. These are separate access rules; check the card and upgrade variant before calculating a final force.

Practical sequence

Use the Hussars to scout the edge of an enemy formation, identify the anti-cavalry screen and approach artillery only when it is exposed. If a safe engagement begins, keep the unit attacking long enough to charge Death Strike; if heavy infantry arrives, disengage before the ability’s damage is outweighed by lost cavalry. Trample is useful against grouped light units but leaves the cavalry close to enemy fire. Keep a route open and use infantry or ranged cavalry to handle units that counter heavy cavalry. In a Hanover army, the Hussar can provide fast pressure while Black Brunswicker or Line Infantry supports the frontline, but the settlement’s train limit and population still restrict how many can be fielded.

Comparison with Hussars

The Totenkopf Hussar resembles a standard Hussar but has a different stat and recruitment balance. It has lower hit points and slightly less hand attack, costs less Food but slightly more Coin, and becomes available through a native site from the Commerce Age. Its special attack and Valor Promotion create a different reward for keeping it in combat: the ordinary Hussar offers familiar heavy-cavalry pressure, while the Totenkopf can build toward a powerful Death Strike and gain ranks from kills. Neither profile has a general bonus against all targets, so use scouting and formation rather than expecting the special attack to overcome a direct counter.

Promotion is not the age upgrade

Valor Promotion and the Veteran or Royal Guard technologies are separate systems. Valor ranks are earned from defeating military units and change hit points and rate of fire; the Hanoverian age upgrades change hit points and damage for eligible trainable versions. The mercenary and Guard variants do not share every upgrade rule. Before spending resources, identify whether the unit came from the Hanover palace, German Royal Embassy, Home City shipment or Death Ride. A promoted native unit can still be ineligible for a Hanoverian upgrade, and a Guard replacement does not necessarily share the ordinary train limit. This distinction prevents overestimating the final force by combining incompatible bonuses.

Attacking buildings and protecting workers

The siege attack deals 20 damage at range six every three seconds, and cavalry speed lets the unit threaten an exposed building or worker line. Its role is harassment rather than sustained siege: towers and anti-cavalry units can force it away, and the main melee weapon is more valuable against field units. Use the Hussar to force a reaction, then retreat or join the main army when defenders arrive. A charge into Pikemen or Musketeers can lose the unit before Death Strike is ready. If using a shipment, keep the limited group alive and use mobility to choose the next target rather than committing it to a fortified Town Center.

Death Strike timing

The charge is automatic and requires eight hits in the current standard profile, or four after Royal Scots Grey. This makes attack duration and target survival important: a target that dies before the charge is ready does not receive the special blow, so focus the Hussar on durable targets it can safely stay beside.

Avoiding the anti-cavalry screen

Use vision to locate heavy infantry before diving on artillery. If Pikemen or Musketeers are guarding the guns, attack the screen with ranged support or draw it away first; speed alone does not make a cavalry charge favorable.

Death Strike target

Prioritize durable units that can absorb the charge while the Hussar remains protected.

House of Hanover mobile heavy Cavalry

The Totenkopf Hussar is a Commerce Age Native heavy Cavalry unit recruited from a Trading Post or Tambo on a House of Hanover palace, or from a Native Embassy where available. It costs 70 Food and 90 Coin, takes 42 seconds to train and has a cap of 12 per palace. Its profile lists 180 hit points, 30% ranged resistance, speed 7.25 and sight 15. The 27-damage hand attack fires every 1.5 seconds, and an 18-damage Trample attack covers an area of three. A 20-damage Siege attack gives it a way to threaten buildings after winning the field. Its low hit points relative to other heavy Cavalry mean that it should exploit speed and resistance rather than absorb prolonged focus fire.

Charge Death Strike and promotion

Death Strike is a charged hand attack that deals 54 damage and requires eight hits to charge. The ability rewards sustained combat against favorable targets, but a low-health Hussar can be lost before reaching the charge. Engage with support and withdraw from anti-Cavalry formations when the unit cannot safely continue attacking. Valor Promotion is a separate ability path that can improve its performance where available; do not confuse it with the charge condition. Its settlement-based train cap makes the House of Hanover a strategic reinforcement point. Keep the Trading Post or Native Embassy safe and reserve Food and Coin for replacements only when the expected fight can exploit its mobility, charge or Siege contribution.
