Special ability or role: Claims treasures; Builds Town Centers and Trading Posts; Trains Eagle Scouts*. If reduced to zero hit points, it collapses rather than dying; after regenerating 100 hit points, a friendly unit or building nearby can revive it.

Matchup & timing

Use the hero to reveal the map, defeat manageable Treasure guardians and claim nearby Treasures; avoid trading the hero’s health for a reward guarded by a force it cannot beat. A Trading Post ability turns the hero into an early map-control tool; scout the route first and build where the site can be defended. Use the Town Center ability to establish expansion only after scouting a safe location and enough nearby resources. Use its training ability when Eagle Scouts* are needed; keep the hero safe while units are being produced. If it collapses, keep a friendly unit or building nearby and protect the recovery period until it reaches 100 hit points.

Hero statistics, aura and special abilities

The Aztec War Chief is the Aztec explorer and melee hero. It costs 200 Coin to train or revive, takes 20 seconds and has a one-unit limit. The base profile has 500 hit points, 10% ranged resistance, speed 4.5 and line of sight 18. Its ordinary hand attack deals six damage every 1.5 seconds, with a three-times multiplier against Treasure Guardians and a 0.25 multiplier against Villagers; its siege attack deals 15 damage at range 6 every three seconds. The low ordinary attack value is not the whole combat story: the hero’s abilities, treasure role and support radius provide much of its value. It sees stealth, can claim Treasure, build Town Centers and Trading Posts, and trains Eagle Scouts under the current rules. The War Chief Support aura doubles the experience bounty from kills made by nearby friendly units. Keep it close to the army when fighting, but far enough behind the frontline that it is not focused down. A large battle can therefore advance Home City shipments faster when the hero remains in range. The hero also recruits a human Treasure Guardian after a four-second conversion; the ability has a 90-second cooldown shared with Swashbuckler Attack. Swashbuckler requires The Chief Tribal Council member and sweeps a radius of 3 for 60 hand damage, with special multipliers against guardians, Villagers and MercType2 mercenaries. Choosing that council member gives a strong area attack but ties up the same cooldown as guardian recruitment, so decide whether the fight or a new guardian matters more before activating it. Cuachic Ascension deals 60 damage to Treasure Guardians in a radius of 2 and increases the War Chief’s attack speed by 30% for 13 seconds; its cooldown is 60 seconds. Health regeneration restores 0.25% of maximum health per second after 3.5 seconds idle. If reduced to zero hit points, the hero collapses rather than dying and can be recovered by a nearby friendly unit or building after regenerating 100 hit points. War Chief Ceremony at the Community Plaza can also return the hero and improve hit points. These recovery rules make a timely retreat valuable: protect the collapsed hero and allow it to recover instead of abandoning its aura and abilities. The Aztec War Chief improves automatically with age. The source lists +50% hit points and damage in the Commerce Age, +100% hit points and +150% damage in the Fortress Age, +100% hit points and +200% damage in the Industrial Age, and +275% in the Imperial Age. That scaling can make the hero’s combat contribution much greater later, while the XP aura remains useful throughout. Its speed of 4.5 is slower than cavalry, so use Eagle Scouts or other units for wide scouting and let the War Chief support the main army rather than chase every target. In practical play, the hero can open by collecting nearby Treasure and scouting enemy hunts, then join the army when a fight can produce kills and experience. Use it to build the first Trading Post or Town Center when safe, recruit guardians when they add a useful role, and preserve its life through its collapse-and-recovery mechanic. Keep it away from Villager fire and ranged focus; its low base ranged resistance does not make it a frontline tank. Compare the original WarChiefs abilities with Definitive Edition: the guardian recruitment and Cuachic Ascension names and effects are not interchangeable with every older description.

Keep the aura active without risking the hero

The experience bonus applies within a radius of 24, so the War Chief should accompany the army’s important engagements while remaining just behind the units that take the first contact. Nearby kills can generate experience twice as quickly, advancing shipments, but a collapsed hero gives no support until recovered. Collect Treasure early, use Cuachic Ascension when guardians are clustered, and reserve the shared Recruit Guardian and Swashbuckler cooldown for the ability that fits the moment. If the hero is injured, idle it briefly to trigger regeneration or return it to a friendly building; War Chief Ceremony provides another recovery route. These choices keep the hero useful across several fights instead of trading it for a single attack.

Treasure hero, builder and Eagle Scout trainer

The Aztec War Chief costs 200 Coin, takes 20 seconds to train and is limited to one. He has 500 hit points, 10% ranged resistance, speed 4.5 and sight 18. He claims Treasures, builds Town Centers and Trading Posts, and can train Eagle Scouts where that option is available. His hand attack deals six damage and has a strong bonus against Treasure Guardians, while his 15-damage Siege attack supports a push after defenders are cleared. The Guardian Sweep is a 60-damage area attack that targets Guardians and has a 60-second cooldown. Use the hero to explore and secure valuable Treasure while opening Native access, then return him to the army when a fight is likely.

Swashbuckler and recovery

The Chief card enables Swashbuckler, a 60-damage area attack with a 90-second cooldown and its own Guardian bonus. The ability is card-gated, so do not plan around it before the card is sent. If the War Chief reaches zero hit points, he collapses instead of dying; a friendly unit or building can revive him after he regenerates 100 hit points, and the War Chief Ceremony at the Community Plaza provides another recovery method. Protect the recovery area and clear enemies before waiting for the hero to stand. The War Chief should not be used as a disposable frontline unit: his exploration, building and Treasure abilities remain valuable after a fight, and losing the only hero can delay map control.
