Berber Ghorfas

Berber Ghorfas is an Exploration Age technology associated with a Berber settlement in The African Royals. It can be researched at a Trading Post or Tambo built on a Berber kingdom, or at the University when the Hausa have the Berber Alliance. Its field effect slows nearby enemy military units, turning selected economic buildings into local movement-control zones.

Effect
Enemy military units in an Area of Effect of 9.5 around Mills, Estates, Farms, and Rice Paddies, an Area of Effect of 5 around Fields, and an Area of Effect of 12 around Haciendas have their speed reduced by 30%

Effect & research conditions

Research takes 50 seconds and costs 150 Food, 250 Wood and 250 Coin; African civilizations also pay 620 Influence. Once active, it reduces enemy military-unit speed by 30% within a radius of 9.5 around Mills, Estates, Farms and Rice Paddies, radius 5 around Fields, and radius 12 around Haciendas. The effect is tied to the listed buildings and distances; it is not a map-wide slow.

Research condition

The African Royals; Exploration Age; Trading Post or Tambo on a Berber kingdom, or Hausa University with the Berber Alliance; 50 seconds; 150 Food, 250 Wood, 250 Coin and 620 Influence for African civilizations; enemy military units within the specified building auras move 30% slower.

When to research

Use it when the settlement has several of the affected buildings near resource routes or likely approaches. The larger Hacienda radius can cover more ground, while the smaller Field radius requires closer placement. It is a defensive positioning tool: it can hinder an approach near the economy, but it does not replace an army that can intercept the slowed force.

A building-based area denial effect

The slow applies around listed economic buildings, so placement determines where it can matter. Mills, Estates, Farms and Rice Paddies project a 9.5 radius; Fields project a 5 radius; Haciendas project a 12 radius. Overlapping resource sites can make an enemy approach less direct, but the technology does not damage units or prevent them from attacking the buildings.

Access depends on the settlement or alliance

A player needs a Trading Post or Tambo on a Berber kingdom. Hausa can instead use a University while allied with the Berbers. The different access routes are important when planning where to research it; do not assume that every African civilization can simply select it from an ordinary Market or military building.
