Role, availability & values

Production is available through Corral or Fort. It has 205 hit points and 20% ranged resistance. It moves at 7.25 speed and uses 2 population. Training costs 55 Food and 100 Coin; it takes 35 seconds to train. Attack profile: Hand attack deals 9 damage. Ranged attack deals 20 damage. Siege attack deals 10 damage. Hand attack bonuses: 3.0× against Heavy cavalry, 3.0× against Artillery, and 2.0× against Hand shock trooper. Ranged attack bonuses: 3.0× against Heavy cavalry, 3.0× against Artillery, 2.0× against Hand shock trooper, and 0.5× against Villager.

Matchup & timing

Hand attack is especially effective against Heavy cavalry (3×), Artillery (3×), Hand shock trooper (2×). Ranged attack is especially effective against Heavy cavalry (3×), Artillery (3×), Hand shock trooper (2×). Its reduced multipliers against Villager (0.5×) make it less suitable for those targets. Use ranged fire to focus Heavy cavalry, Artillery, and Hand shock trooper before they can close; hold the melee attack for Heavy cavalry, Artillery, and Hand shock trooper when they enter contact. Keep a frontline between this unit and threats that can reach it safely.

Fast cavalry for interception and raids

The Musket Rider is a Fortress Age Haudenosaunee light ranged cavalry unit trained from a Corral or Fort. It costs 55 Food and 100 Coin, takes 35 seconds, occupies two population and has 205 hit points with 20% ranged resistance. Speed 7.25 and line of sight 15 allow it to move between threats quickly. Its ranged attack deals 20 damage at range 12 every three seconds, with a 3.0 multiplier against Heavy Cavalry and Artillery and 2.0 against hand Shock Troops; it deals only half damage to Villagers. Its 9-damage hand attack fires every 1.5 seconds and has a 3.0 multiplier against Heavy Cavalry and Artillery. A 10-damage siege attack at range 6 is secondary. The combination makes it a useful cavalry interceptor and artillery hunter, rather than a unit intended to defeat every infantry group. Use its speed to chase cavalry that threatens the Haudenosaunee ranged line, or to force an exposed opponent to defend workers. The short 12 range means it must approach closer than some ranged cavalry, so avoid sitting in the firing arc of longer-ranged units. Hit-and-run attacks work best against a target that cannot catch the Riders; heavy cavalry and anti-cavalry units can still trade well if they close. Kanya Horsemen or infantry can complement the Musket Riders by occupying enemy units while the ranged cavalry attacks artillery or moves around the flank. The unit’s 55 Food cost is relatively low among cavalry and can leave more Food for Aenna or Villager production, but 100 Coin and two population still make a large force expensive. Keep an eye on the population cap and avoid producing them as a default response when the opponent is building Heavy Infantry. The Haudenosaunee have fewer cavalry upgrade options than some European civilizations. Cavalry Hitpoints and Cavalry Damage Home City Cards are valuable when choosing a cavalry plan, and Ranged Cavalry Caracole and Horse Secrets provide additional support. The War Chief aura and War Ceremony can improve the unit’s late-game performance, but those bonuses require the corresponding support and should not be treated as part of the base profile. At maximum age with the relevant Haudenosaunee bonuses, the source comparison describes strong attack and hit points, but the unit still relies on positioning and the civilization’s limited late-game economy. Tomahawks or other infantry may be easier to sustain in some situations. Use Musket Riders when their mobility and anti-cavalry or anti-artillery multipliers solve a real problem; keep them away from Heavy Infantry and Light Ranged Cavalry, which can punish their approach. In team play, coordinate their interception role with an ally’s frontline instead of sending them into the main battle unsupported. Older versions showed higher ranged resistance and different artillery multipliers. Current values are 20% ranged resistance and a 3.0 multiplier against artillery in both attack profiles, following Definitive Edition balance changes. The profile keeps the unit relevant as a fast specialist while making its approach and retreat decisions important.

What its counters mean in play

The 3.0 bonuses against Heavy Cavalry and Artillery apply to both the ranged and hand attacks, so the Musket Rider can contribute whether it is kiting at range or has reached melee. Its 2.0 hand Shock Troop bonus gives it another defensive matchup when a melee unit reaches it, but the ranged profile should still be used to preserve its health. The anti-artillery bonus is especially useful when Kanya Horsemen or allied cavalry can create a safe opening. Do not infer that it counters every cavalry unit equally: its value is concentrated against Heavy Cavalry, and it has no multiplier advantage over ordinary infantry. Use the 7.25 speed to disengage from a losing fight and protect the two-population investment for the next engagement. Its cavalry upgrades and the Haudenosaunee War Chief aura can improve the group, but do not send a small force beyond support simply because those bonuses are available.

Protect the approach to its short firing range

A Musket Rider group is easiest to control when it has a clear retreat lane behind friendly infantry. Use the first volley to draw heavy cavalry toward that screen, then reposition before the enemy’s longer-ranged units can focus the Riders. Their role is not to stand in place trading shots with skirmishers. The short range and moderate resistance reward movement, while the cavalry multipliers reward waiting for the right target. If the enemy is avoiding the Riders, threaten a side route or use them to escort a siege advance; do not expose them to a fortified position without a plan to retreat.

Haudenosaunee ranged cavalry counter profile

The Musket Rider is a Fortress Age Haudenosaunee ranged Cavalry unit trained at a Corral or Fort. It costs 55 Food and 100 Coin, takes 35 seconds, uses two population and has 205 hit points with speed 7.25. Its ranged attack deals 20 damage at range 12 every three seconds, with 3× damage against Heavy Cavalry and Artillery and 2× against Hand Shock Troops; Villagers take half damage. A separate hand attack also benefits against Heavy Cavalry, Artillery and Hand Shock Troops. This gives the unit a clear role against expensive mounted units and exposed artillery, but it is not a general-purpose raider against every target. Maintain distance when firing and keep anti-infantry support nearby so Skirmishers cannot freely focus the Riders. Its low Food cost can fit a force with other Wood demands, while its Coin and population still make careless losses expensive.
