Scenario setting & objectives

The required goals are Stop the prisoner convoy before it reaches its destination. (2,000 XP); Find and free your captured shipmates. (15,000 XP).

Mission approach

Scout the named destination and keep the required hero or escort force safe on the route; clear defenders before moving the mission-critical unit into range. Scout the target and its approach, then preserve enough of the starting army to finish the required assault. Scout the route before moving the hero or starting force, and avoid splitting units the mission needs together. Track the explicit survival or deadline condition throughout the mission; optional fighting can wait if it risks that requirement.

Mission setting and objectives

A Rescue in the Wilderness is the fourth scenario of Act II: China in The Asian Dynasties and takes place in 1422. Captain Huang and Lao Chen lead a rescue mission through an unfamiliar wilderness to recover the lost crew, including Admiral Jinhai. The player must stop a prisoner convoy before it reaches its destination, earning 2,000 XP, and find and free the captured shipmates for 15,000 XP. The map resembles Bayou and contains Maya settlements, forested passages and several native encampments. The first objective is timed, so exploration and combat need to advance together rather than waiting for a large army.

Starting force and tree-clearing ability

The Treasure Fleet begins in the southwest with Captain Huang, Lao Chen and four Chu Ko Nu. Huang’s special ability knocks down trees that block the route, making him essential to opening the map. Use it immediately at the first obstruction, then defeat the small group of two Jaguar Prowl Knights and three Eagle Runner Knights. Huang can clear the next trees after the fight. These passages are more than scenery: using the ability quickly shortens the path to stranded units and the convoy. Keep the heroes with the Chu Ko Nu so they can use their abilities before enemy melee units reach the ranged troops.

Rescue groups and establish an economy

Moving east reveals three Villagers, a Qiang Pikeman and two additional Chu Ko Nu. Put the Villagers to work chopping Wood for a Town Center while the military force advances. A nearby Maya settlement can support a Trading Post and recruitment of Maya Holcan Spearmen, providing affordable reinforcements without waiting for the Chinese production base to mature. As the path opens, defeat each native group and recover further stranded Villagers and Chu Ko Nu. Return the Villagers to the Town Center site when enough Wood has been collected; send them to hunt Capybaras for Food and later to nearby Silver Mines for Coin as more crew members join.

Clear the central and eastern positions

An Aztec group near a War Hut and a short wooden wall will charge once it spots the player. Defeat it, then continue north across the shallow river to find more villagers and Chu Ko Nu behind another tree obstruction. Huang’s ability can remove the blockage and add those units to the rescue party. Further east, Jaguar Prowl Knights can inflict heavy damage if allowed to reach the Chu Ko Nu. Use Huang’s ability to weaken or disrupt the attackers before they connect, then destroy the War Hut so the position cannot support the enemy. The rescued villagers should strengthen the developing economy while the heroes and military unit group continue toward the prisoners.

Free the stockades and stop the convoy

A walled cavern contains two Stockades holding large groups of captured Villagers and Chu Ko Nu. Destroy the stockades to release them, then assign villagers between Coin mining and Food gathering. Combine the new Chu Ko Nu with the starting force before moving south along the riverbank to the prisoner convoy. It is guarded by two waves of native warriors: Jaguar Prowl Knights and Eagle Runner Knights attack as soon as they see the player. Use Huang’s ability against the first wave and Lao Chen’s ability to finish or control the second, while the Chu Ko Nu focus fire. Defeating the guards secures the convoy’s Villagers and completes the timed rescue objective.

Build strength for the final rescue

After the convoy is captured, divide its Villagers between Food and Coin and build a War Academy as the economy grows. Advance through the Commerce and Fortress Ages with the Porcelain Tower and Temple of Heaven, which supply economic and military benefits for this scenario. Maya Holcan Spearmen can supplement the army, and the map’s Llamas provide a quick Food source. Enemy units continue to attack if their settlements remain active, so keep clearing positions rather than waiting passively. Castles and Hand Mortars become useful for breaking enemy buildings; protect the siege units with Steppe Riders and Iron Flails because Jaguar Prowl Knights can quickly reach and destroy them.

Destroy the native bases and remaining cages

The final phase requires a concentrated force to attack the northwestern Nobles’ Hut, Aztec temple and remaining War Huts. Use Flamethrowers and Hand Mortars to destroy the structures, with Steppe Riders and Iron Flails screening the artillery from melee attacks. The defenders include large groups of Jaguar Prowl Knights and Eagle Runner Knights, so do not underestimate their ability to absorb fire and reach the siege line. After the settlements are cleared, defeat the final stationed Eagle Runner Knights guarding three Stockades. Destroy all three to free the remaining crew members and complete the scenario.

Protect the heroes and artillery

Captain Huang and Lao Chen are central to the route-clearing and combat abilities. Keep them with the ranged force so the abilities can interrupt native charges. During the final attack, Hand Mortars and Flamethrowers need Steppe Rider and Iron Flail protection; otherwise Jaguar Prowl Knights can reach the siege line and destroy the units needed to finish the stockades.

Treasure and resource pacing

Five treasures are placed around the map, with groups in the south and east. Collect those that lie along the route, but do not delay the convoy rescue to clear a distant treasure. Use the rescued Villagers to create the economy that supports the later War Academy, age advances and siege force.

Complete the crew rescue

Destroying the last three Stockades frees the final shipmates and ends the scenario; the earlier convoy rescue alone does not complete the second objective.

Intercept the convoy, then find the shipmates

The mission’s two required objectives are sequential rescue operations: stop the prisoner convoy before it reaches its destination, then locate and free the captured shipmates. The recorded rewards are 2,000 XP for stopping the convoy and 15,000 XP for freeing the crew, making the second objective a major progression point. Move quickly enough to intercept the convoy, but keep a reserve with the starting force so the first rescue does not leave the follow-up search undefended. Once the convoy is stopped, scout nearby routes and clear defenders around the prisoners before sending heroes into the area. This is the fourth Act II: China scenario, so its mission-specific force and objectives take precedence over ordinary Chinese skirmish assumptions. Secure the rescued units and regroup before moving to the next marker; an objective can be completed while the rescued force remains vulnerable to nearby enemies.
